The thing Wanda couldn’t understand, those were the very things that always managed to capture her focus. To swallow it whole, until she wasn’t sure if she was consuming or being consumed anymore. The kind of focus had led her to the city streets in protest, it led her to Hydra, to Ultron. To another universe.
And now it led her to Cassie Lang.
In her universe, Cassie was a friend, a sudden sort of one. Five years in the Soul Stone, while Cassie kept growing had put them at nearly the same age, and so of course they had gravitated towards one another. But there was so much to do, so much to rebuild, and Wanda had let herself forget that time could be so precious. That no matter how young or old they were, the worst could happen.
And she could only undo it in her dreams.
But Cassie, unlike her brother, was real. Other people were talking to her, she was like Scott. Alive when they had no right to be, alive through some power not their own. Wanda wanted to know what that power was.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered as she caught herself staring. She stepped over the threshold. “It’s just... Still so hard to believe that you’re really here. Even in my universe... Clint was gone before it happened, but I remember–” She cut herself off, shaking her head. “That’s probably the last thing you want to talk about, isn’t it?”
