BIOGRAPHY
Tw: gang activity, murder, implied abuse, foster care.
-Born in 1990 as Caroline R. Novak in New York. Mother and stepdad pretty poor, involved in gang activities. So pretty young, around 12, Caroline also started doing some stuff for the gang, until they were officially in it. One of the main leader was really hard on Caroline and took particular attention to them. So after some time, they ended up killing him. They were surprised to see that it earned them respect from the other members instead of death.
-They were caught at 16 for drug related crimes. To avoid going to prison/juvy, they helped catch some of the gang's member, including their mother and stepfather.
-That's when 2006 they were sentenced to community service and taken out of the state for their own safety. They ended up in Oregon's foster care system until they found the Days who adopted them.
-With the Days, they converted into Christianity and they changed their name. They took on their middle name, Riley. They did their community service, but even after this was done, their continued volunteering, in and out of the church, to redeem themselves.
-They ended up going to university on a soccer scholarship as the goalie when they were 20, late on their schooling because their upbringing. They studied criminal justice and later on, restorative justice.
-After their degree, they got a job as a restorative justice facilitator in Kismet Harbor and surroundings towns. They also started coaching an amateur soccer team for teenagers, and they continued volunteering.
-They're usually really calm and won't get into fights or take sides easily.
-As much as they try to do as much good as they can and as much as people would see them as a sweetheart who could do no wrong, they still don't believe they're a good person, just trying to be.
He'd always appreciated their presence, their calmness. It made it all more bearable, more serene as he sat in quiet, longing for a break from time. Occupied with the clearing of a mind much too busy for the thoughts that Sam had nursed for much too long at this point. The days spent in Chicago had been supposed to deprive him of his memories' incredible weight, but now, it all seemed so faint and futile.
Brisk air swirled around him as the clouds painted the sky a deeply bleak gradient. Green-blue eyes remained on the line of the horizon, right above the dark ocean's undulating surface. He wondered, for a single moment, if Riley had already spotted one of the giant animals, one was supposed to catch a glimpse of, this time of year. And he wondered, if Riley knew that he hadn't asked them to join him because of the whales.
"What color do you think resembles regret?" His voice was quiet as it cut through the gust of wind that brushed the exposed parts of his skin and painted his cheeks a rosy hue. And at once, he averted his gaze and aimed it towards Riley.
Riley would never refuse a walk. Rain or frost would seldom deter them from going on a stroll, especially if a friend offered one. Was Sam a friend? They didn't want to make any assumptions, but they had no issue considering them part of their friends.
So naturally, they accompanied him to watch the whales. They may have wondered if that had been the only reason, but they didn't bring it up. It was reason enough after all. So here they were, watching the horizon with patience and calm. They loved the ocean so much. It was so different from New York, what she remembered of it, despite the city being surrounded by water, and maybe that's what brought so much peace. That despite everything they'd done, despite everything they were still trying to atone for, they were here, and grateful.
They titled their head as they pondered over his question. A bit peculiar, maybe, but they liked the idea of emotions being liked to colours, even though it wasn't one they'd considered before beyond the whole anger is red and jealous is green. After a moment, they gave a faint smile, their tone steady but thoughtful. "You know, I think regret is yellow. Not the bright, happy kind—more like the dull, washed-out yellow of old photographs or faded wallpaper. It’s the color of something that used to be vibrant but got worn down by time or mistakes. Something you can’t quite bring back." They glanced over. "What do you think?" @samxbradford
He smirked at Riley for a moment as they were the same. "I think it was since our parents didn't let us do this a lot." not that it wasn't allowed, it was just a cos,t and they knew there was a bigger chance of loss over winning. "How about Snowball Bowling..." he said as he looked at it and the line didn't seem as long. @havearileymazingday
"Let's go," Riley replied with a smile as they headed towards the short line. They were glad to be able to spend time with their brother like this. And while they learnt that snowball bowling wasn't in the list of things they were good at, it was still a good time. @tylerxday
It figured-starting the year off right with a cold-or something. He felt like shit and needed something to make it through until it did pass, sooner rather than later. So he'd gone into Sue's Discount Pharmacy and picked up some cold meds which they said was the best to work as fast as possible. He had no idea if that was true but he was hoping for the best.
He let out a deep breath as he went outside and sat down on a bench, attempting to open the meds. For safety and all, it wasn't easy. The box holding the bottle was glued shut pretty well, and then the bottle itself seemed to be some sort of trick to get open. "What the…?" he muttered, frustrated as he fiddled with the bottle, trying to open it.
"Need some help?" Riley asked as they passed by Kacey, recognising him from the volunteering event. Nothing said they'd actually be able to help him in any real way, but it had become like a second nature for Riley to offer help whenever they could. They may just have to admit defeat soon but trying was part of it. "Oh yeah, those bottle are annoying," they said with a sigh. "Supposedly for kids' safety, which fair enough, but it feel also adult safe." They let out a small laugh as they tried to get the bottle open. @kaceyxhuddington
Riley enjoyed giving gifts, though they weren't sure they were very good at it. They always felt bad for gifting people things they might not use, and they knew not everyone liked to get practical stuff either. Either way, they always felt like they ended up buying at least one of their gifts last minutes. They paused as someone talked to them and turned to see Renee, who they knew from the LGBTQIA+ club. "Hey," they said while thinking, "it's pretty nice. Classic while managing to be original. Depends who it's for." @reneexthompsxn
"I was thinking the same thing," Renee had to agree with a smile. While she was supposed to be looking for more gifts for Prue, not that her girlfriend needed more gifts but because she wanted to buy her more gifts. "I was actually thinking of it for myself," she admitted to Riley, "I know, most people go around buying gifts at these vendors for other people but I saw it and well," she laughed softly, "I just needed someone else's opinion to make sure I wasn't totally crazy for it catching my eye." @havearileymazingday
"It's important to gift yourself things as well," Riley said with a smile, "on treat oneself as people say." That wasn't something they did enough, or much at all to be honest, for several reasons. Yet, they were aware that people should do that once in a while. "I don't think there's any rule against getting things for yourself here. Maybe it's the best moment actually, since no one will know who it's for anyway. But I can say you're not crazy, it's a good choice!" @reneexthompsxn
Riley dusted off their palms on their shorts, calm as ever, and gave a small shrug with an amused smile. "Switch places? Tempting, but trust me, I’m a disaster outside the goal. You’d probably end up chasing the ball halfway across the field. But hey, nice shot," they added as they moved back into position, settling into a relaxed stance. "Let’s see if you can make it two for two. No pressure, though." Their smile lingered, casual and steady, as they nodded to let him know they were ready. @hudsonxelliot
"Ah, maybe one of these days I will convince you otherwise," Hudson joked in return with Riley before nodding his head. "Two for two, coming right up." The man dribbled the ball back up the field, the focus on the ball until he made it to center field. Hudson turned, facing Riley once more and began to run towards the goal with the ball. He carried it across the field, beginning to move to the left of the field to take a shot before pivoting at the last second to go to the right and taking the shot on goal. "Goaaaalllll!" Hudson called out, cheering for himself as he grinned at Riley. "Had to throw in that fake out, I'm sorry." @havearileymazingday
With the veer, Hudson watched as Riley made an attempt to lunge sideways for the ball. His eyes locked on the ball as it flew past their fingertips and the back of the net flew out as the ball went into it. "Woo!" Hudson cheered, pumping his fist into the air with a laugh. "I'll take what I can get," he called back to them as they tossed the ball back towards the center of the field. "Happy to switches places with you, too if you want to take some shots on goal," he commented, stopping the ball with tap of his foot. @havearileymazingday

Clearing her head was exactly the thing Tanner needed and she paused for a moment to mull over the suggestion, head clearly somewhere else for just a beat before she shifted her gaze back to Riley. "That sounds...nice. I might have to make that the first thing on my list for tomorrow." With her schedule as clear as could be, it was becoming a struggle to find new ways to fill it, so she was glad to have at least something to look forward to. "Small-town charm. Not something I'm used to. New York City and Vegas are about as far from it as you can get."
Riley gave a soft laugh, leaning an elbow casually on the counter as they glanced at Tanner. "I get that," they said, their voice calm and reflective. "I was born in New York, so I know what it’s like to grow up in the middle of all that noise and movement. It’s... different. Kismet’s quieter, yeah, but it’s the kind of quiet that grows on you. You start to notice things here that you’d never have time for in the city."
They looked out of the window briefly before setting their gaze back on Tanner. "I’ve found there’s something nice about not having to keep up with the pace all the time. Here, it’s like you can actually take a breath, let yourself slow down."
He was glad to spend time with Riley. He knew he needed more family time with how he had been feeling lately. So alone and forgot about even knowing at the same time, he knew it was far from true. "Um" he looked at what they had as prizes. "I don't really know..." he smirked "I guess I don't really care..." he sighed "what bout you?" he asked. @havearileymazingday
Riley was always glad for time with their family, even though their schedule was often so busy they hardly had time to see people. For a good cause though, literally. "Eh, me neither," they replied with a gentle smile. "Any prize is a good prize, no?" @tylerxday
"So, what did you get Carol for Christmas?" Marley asked Riley as they walked around the winter festival and looked through the booths that were set up full of gifts. Every year, Marley strived to get the perfect gift for the woman who helped her after her parents had kicked her out and this year was no different. Hell, she even did it for the rest of the Days. "Or have you gotten her gift yet?"
"I have not..." Riley replied, somewhat guiltly. They felt so grateful to the Days, especially their mother who spent so much time with them when they arrived so many years ago. It was hard repaying that kind of gratitude in gifts, and while they'd tried every Christmas, it never really felt like enough. So buying a gift made it difficult, even though Carol was the kind of person to appreciate any small gesture. "I'm still not sure what I'm going to get. Have you bought yours?" @marleyxmadden
kismet harbor's 100th annual winter festival - shopping
Renee had some free time before she went to catch up with Prue and had wandered into the part of downtown Kismet Harbor that had stretches of people set up selling their crafts, items for gifts and food as well. She had already bought Prue's gift, but this time they'd be exchanging gifts as girlfriends and she couldn't help but wonder if she should get her more. Renee grabbed a dress and pulled it out from the rack - though it caught her attention for herself and not for something she'd buy Prue. "Excuse me," she looked up as she felt someone nearby, "what do you think of this?"

To be honest, Tanner didn't know what it was she was looking for. Without her job keeping her busy, it felt like she didn't know what to do with herself anymore. The free time was something unusual for her and she was glad for any recommendations of ways to fill it. "That doesn't sound so bad. I've never spent a ton of time around beaches, so that'd be nice, actually." It was probably more calm than she would be able to stand for long, but if nothing else it was at least a place to go.
"Wingman's, yeah, you're not the first person to recommend that one." There must be something to it if there were multiple people adding it to their lists. That or it was just such a local staple that everyone felt obligated to. "Shit, probably should have gone there instead of here. A drink sounds better than a coffee anyway. Is the pub far from here?"
"You should definitely check out the beach sometime. There’s something about it—it’s good for clearing your head." Riley looked outside. Their schedule was far from empty between their job and all the volunteering they tried to fit in. The pier and the beach had become their refuge, a place where they could just exist without any demands pulling at them. "It’s not far," they said, their voice unhurried, gentle. "Wingman’s is one of those places with the usual small-town charm. But coffee’s not a bad choice either, especially on a day like today." @tannerkohli
Riley had offered their brother that they spend some time at the Winter Festival. Christmas had been Riley's favourite holiday for a while now, almost ever since she arrived at the Days', so they always enjoyed the festival as a lead up to it. "So what price are you aiming for?" they asked they got ready to take their shot at the reindeer ring toss.
Riley steadied themselves in front of the goal, their eyes fixed on Hudson, who was closing in fast. They knew he’d go for the big shot, and they were ready for it. As Hudson took that final step to launch the ball, Riley dove to the side, arms outstretched, just in time to block it.
"Not today!" Riley laughed, rolling to their feet and quickly getting back into position. "You’ve gotta try harder than that!" @hudsonxelliot
As the ball took off towards the goal, he stopped in his tracks. Hudson lifted his hand, shielding the Oregon sun from his eyes as he trained his eyes to follow the ball. When it neared the goal, he felt his teeth sink into his bottom lip in anticipation, only for Riley to dive in front of it and block it just in time. At their words, Hudson laughed and shook his head, "I underestimated you," he teased, stopping the ball with his foot as they rolled it back to him. Hudson dribbled the ball back towards the center of the field before turning it around to head towards Riley once more. His focus was centered on the goal, coming up on it, only to kick the ball at the last minute to the left, rather than on center. @havearileymazingday
Riley laughed as they adjusted their stance. "You're not the first hotshot who's tried to sneak one past me." They tilted their head, eyes sparkling with mischief. "But hey, keep trying. Practice makes perfect, right?"
When he veered left at the last second and sent the ball flying off-center, Riley lunged sideways but Hudson’s clever last-minute swerve worked like a charm. The ball sailed just past Riley’s outstretched fingertips, hitting the back of the net with a satisfying thud..
"Well," Riley said, pushing themselves back up with a grin and dustin themselves. "I'll give you that one but don't get too comfortable." They got the ball, spinning it in their hands before throwing it back towards the center of the field. @hudsonxelliot
It was something Tanner had always sensed in her trips to the town, a friendliness that she didn't see as much in the bigger cities she'd always lived in. It was nice in some ways, unnerving in others. Tanner had grown up used to fighting for everything she had, so people that were just nice for no reason were still a mystery to her. "Riley, got it. I'll try to remember that," she nodded back. The attempt would be made, but Tanner wasn't always the best at remembering names if it wasn't someone she saw a lot of. "Something like that, though, yeah. I've visited here enough to not feel completely out of place, but staying for this long, definitely different." There was a lot still to see and figure out as she settled in, all things she knew would come with time. "But, yeah, that'd be great, local opinion. What's the best local spot to go see?"
Riley shrugged with a smile. "Well, depends on what you're into, honestly. If you're looking for a good vibe to just relax and maybe get a little lost in the scenery, I'd recommend taking a walk around the bay. It’s not exactly a secret, but there’s this little stretch of beach that’s perfect for clearing your head, especially in the late afternoon when the sun hits it just right."
They paused, thinking for a second. "But if you're looking to do something a bit more... social, then head to the Wingman's Pub. It’s got that kind of 'you know everyone but no one at the same time' kind of vibe." Riley leaned back. "I'm not sure I'm the best person to ask for this. I'd also recommend the Cobblestone Cafe" @tannerkohli
As much as she could, Tanner tried to avoid using any sort of crutch or help with getting around, but sometimes the pain from her injuries made it nearly impossible. The entire morning her hip had been flaring up with pain, the limp in her step more pronounced than usual. Though she hated doing it, she'd brought the crutches along with her as she went out to grab coffee, letting them take as much of the weight off that side of her body as she could.
Caught up in it, she wasn't paying much attention until she was up to the counter ordering. Hearing her name took a beat before she looked over, vaguely recognizing Riley from some of her time spent around town in the last month. "People really are a lot friendlier here, huh?" she mused, still surprised by it every time someone was just kind. "Fine, though, yeah, just...yeah. Sorry, I don't know your name at all, it's - I've seen you, though."
Riley smiled softly, feeling a bit of warmth at Tanner’s words. "Yeah, Kismet Harbor has a way of doing that, I guess. People are usually pretty chill here." They leaned a little forward on the counter, trying to put the conversation at ease. "I'm Riley," they added. "I’ve seen you around too. I’m guessing you’re still getting used to everything?" They noticed the crutches, but didn’t bring it up, giving Tanner space to address it if she wanted to. "If you need any tips about the area, or just a place to chill, let me know. I've been here for a bit now." @tannerkohli
Hudson grinned enthusiastically as they set down their bag and walked towards the goal. He took the ball, dribbling it to the middle of the field while he waited for them to get into position in the goal. "Ready or not!" He called out, beginning to dribble the ball in the direction of the goal. Hudson's heart was racing his chest as his vision narrowed in on the goal, though it was anything but narrow. Hudson neared the goal, pausing only a moment before the ball rocketed at the goal. @havearileymazingday
