I'm going back. This summer, as I continue to write the second book in Juliette's World Memoir Trilogy, CASTAWAY GREAT BARRIER REEF, the island and turtles call me. Here is my daughter Luci on the cover. Luci had an awakening of sorts, without technology, phones and McDonald's on this remote tropical island. This book is timley: can live without your phone? It's what happens when you're back from bonding with your older daughter on Everest, and find your teenager on the couch. On the island, it's me and Luci. A tent. Barrel of water. Bananas, oranges, dry noodles with no way of cooking it. It's squawking nesting Seabirds above us in the forest canopy. It's giant nesting turtles that descend from the lagoon each night. And dismay when we discover we'd pitched our tent near a babies grave. Life. Death. Rebirth. All on a lonely Great Barrier Reef island during Cyclone season. The barge will return eventually, maybe.
