Our Feet are Heavy, Our Burden is Light
The dimly lit room contained 3786 small stones bound by red twine that surrounded a nine-foot diameter black pool filled with water. Encircling the walls of the perimeter were hollow plaster casts of 48 pairs of holding hands and 2 single outstretched hands. Ten round lamps hung in an ellipse above the pool and 2 sets of concrete feet stood at its edge on the stones. Every three minutes, the silence of the room gave way to the quiet sound of a heartbeat that gradually sped up, followed by a small child's laughter. As the laughter grew silent, the formerly still water in the pool would stir for several seconds, then become still again in the absolute silence of the room.
