A/N: So I don’t normally write for Castle x Reader, but this was a request and I thought I should try. I know it took a while, but hope you like it.
You watch as Kate updates the murder board with the new information Ryan and Esposito have just brought it. Although there is new info, and with the glass board almost three quarters full, it still seems like you’re at square one with this case.
Looking around the room and seeing almost all the desks are occupied, you take a seat at Ryan’s desk, pull out an A4 legal pad and start making notes. You know you don’t have to, what with Kate keeping everyone informed, but you’d learnt early on that your own notes made a difference.
The team know to leave you be when you get like this. Sometimes it lasts all of five minutes before something clicks in your mind, sometimes it could be an hour or three. You’re not one for working with a team, you prefer working on your own for the most part, but when you’d left the marines your therapist had suggested you start working with people around you. Sure, you had a team in the forces, but this… this was different.
Esposito understood you, he’d been part of the Army Special Forces… not exactly the same… but he knew. Kevin tried to make things as easy for you as he could and you appreciated that from the blue-eyed detective.
Kate hadn’t said much when he’d been informed of your previous employment. She’d just listened, given you a nod and said “back to work,”. You loved that about her.
It’s thirty-five minutes later when something does click in your mind regarding the case and you turn to face Kate to let her know of your findings. Taking your legal pad with you and make your way toward the team.
You’re so lost in your own mind you don’t notice the giant of a man entering the bullpen with four cups of to-go coffee in his hand. He’s Kate’s sidekick, from the scuttlebutt in the building. You haven’t had much interaction with him; maybe a quick hello and how are you.
His long strides brings him to Kate’s desk in seven steps and then the smell of coffee permeates your nose, but you don’t want to lose your train of thought and so you don’t turn around.
And then it’s like everything happens in slow motion for you.
You just don’t like people touching you and you’d thought Castle was aware of that. You feel a hand on your back and even though you know it’s nothing to be alarmed about it still jars you. The next thing you’re aware of is Kate’s voice asking you to focus on her and slowly you calm down. It’s then you see you have Castle lying on the ground, chest pressed to the floor, your right arm banded around his neck in a chokehold, your knee pressing into his back while your left hand pulls his arm across his back, as far as it would go.
Castle, for his part, isn’t screaming blue murder, but he is in pain…
It takes you another three agonizingly slow minutes to let him go… the exertion showing on both your faces. He’s panting, trying to catch his breath and you want to feel sorry for him, but you can’t.
“(Y/N)?” Kate asks “you good?”
You nod your head and she turns to Castle, asking him the same question. He says he is, but the look in his eye is doubtful.
Only when she is sure you’re both okay, does Kate stand from her kneeling position. Castle follows her.
“Was she trying to kill me?” you hear him ask Kate.
“Don’t be silly Castle, if she wanted to kill you, you’d be dead already. She’s ex-Marine Force Recon.” At this revelation Castle turns to look at you and its obvious he’s trying to picture you as a Marine. You don’t look the part – not in your civilian clothes.
“She has issues with people touching her and crowding her personal space. We thought you were aware if it, what with all the snooping you do,” Kate continues and you try and stop the smile from blooming on your lips.
“Next time you wanna touch me, Castle, just ask,” you tell him making sure you tone is light and joking.
He offers you a smile of his own, assuring you your unsaid apology is accepted.
