Overlord Movie Review
Overlord comes from producer J.J. Abrams with a screenplay from Billy Ray & Mark L. Smith and is directed by Julius Avery. The cast of the movie features Jovan Adepo and Wyatt Russell in the lead roles with Mathilde Ollivier, Pilou Asbaek, John Margaro, and Iain De Casetecker in supporting roles. The story follows a group of US Paratroopers who get stuck behind enemy lines on the eve of D-Day, while on the mission to destroy a radio tower near Normandy they discover that the place is home to something much worse and evil. Full disclosure, I got to see Overlord at this year's Philadelphia Film Festival as part of their Graveyard Shift lineup of late films and I was not disappointed. I had a blast with this movie from start to finish, Overlord is a bonkers insane fun monster movie.
This is a B Movie at its best and the film makers know that. There is so much insane violence and gore in this movie that I commend the special effects teams for their work. I also enjoyed that the cast were relatively unknown actors and I hope to see more from them in future films and television. There's not really much character development in this movie, but the standouts from the cast were Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, and Mathilde Ollivier. The story itself is not complex or convoluted, it's a fun, simple, action adventure movie with a fresh horror/monster movie spin.
This is the third genre film this year that Paramount Pictures has put out following Annihilation and A Quiet Place. All three of these movies are distinctively different from one another, but each work in their own respective ways within the sci-fi/horror genre. As a genre fan I give much appreciation for Paramount for putting these three movies out this year. Overlord is not going to work for everyone, it's best you understand what movie this is before you see it. As a genre fan I had a big smile on my face once the movie was over and Overlord may be the closest thing we get to having a live action Wolfenstein movie.
This game never ceases to amaze me
Today I learned that the soundtrack from MCU is indistinguishable from Return to Castle Wolfenstein
