Today on the Blind Shots Podcast: The 16th at the Castle Course at St. Andrews is the scene of perhaps the greatest angry golf shot I've ever played. That story and other thoughts on anger and golf this week. On the 6th day of Christmas, #golf gave to me...the Castle Course of St. Andrews. A decidedly non-links course set at the edge of the palisades east of the town, it's a course that thrills and challenges in very different ways than any other course in Fife. It was hard to walk and a blast to play. I found myself using the ground game as much, if not more than, as I did at the proper links courses we played, a characteristic I value above most on any course. The wispy, rough hewn look and tumbling, broken groundscapes of the course were conjured by architect David McLay Kidd from modest pastureland. Its greens are sprawling and wildly contoured, reminding me of Pete Dye's designs at his most devious. It is a course that allows an unusually large number of heroic shots, but has enough width to give players options and opportunities to recover from one wayward strike. Controversial from its inception, the first line of its obituary was written when Tom Doak famously rated the course a "zero" on his scale in his book. I don't understand that sentiment, because the course was so much fun to play. I thought the 5th green was too severely curved, but I had no complaints otherwise. It is not a course that epitomizes Scottish golf, but it allows for strategic shot making in the tradition of great courses everywhere. I'm very glad it was on our itinerary. #GolfTrip #walkinggolfer #ScottishGolf #CastleCourse #StAndrews (at Castle Course) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6ssdqDl-ox/?igshid=1k9mmss5mk7po
