A threesome of Southern cassowary chicks with a parent – but it’s not the mother. When it comes to parental care, father cassowary is all alone. He is solely responsible for the incubation of the eggs, and then takes care of the chicks for nine months. In that time they grow up from small, stripy balls of fluff (as depicted here) to lean, orange-brown teenagers, almost the size of dad. Single dads will go a long way to protect their brood, and cassowaries can be quite dangerous. Their weapon of choice is the sharp, elongated talon on their inner toe, visible in the drawing underneath dad’s dewlap.
