Cat Chaser (Abel Ferrara, 1989)
Oh wow an Elmore Leonard adaptation. It’s ok. Undercooked, or taken off the stove and microwaved by studio types. There’s definitely something strong here, in the characters, backgrounds, motivations, context. That’s more pronounced in the book I’m sure. Or the 3 hour cut that apparently exists.
I also watched the Ferrara-directed pilot for the TV series Crime Story which is rightfully not on here so I can’t tell you what I thought of it other than I long for that mode of television to return and has the reception to crime stories changed, from character-driven things appealing on aspiration, psychology and social reflection to whatever gory detail fear maintenance is running now?
