Imagine Buck’s cat doesn’t actually know it’s Tommy, it has maybe one memory and that is of Buck, so that’s why he ended up at Buck’s, but the cat inadvertently just reminds Buck of Tommy. So Buck takes the cat in.
Buck gets all the cat things and Tommy-cat just acts like a cat. The only thing that might tip Buck off is the cat is slightly snobby with the food that Buck gets. It refuses to eat the cat food that Buck buys, and will only eat Human food that Buck feeds it.
It’s Christmas Day, and Buck is just sitting in his living room, he’s debating calling Tommy but he feels thy he doesn’t deserve to call Tommy, not after the past while of ignoring him and only calling when they need to break the law. So Buck is sitting on the couch, scratching Tommy Cat behind the ears, and he just whispers, “I miss you Tommy” and that triggers something in Tommy Cat. The cat sits up, looks around the room and stares at Buck before nudging his little cat Mouth up towards Buck.
Thinking the cat might just be showing him some affection, Buck indulges and just gives the cat the gentlest kiss on his nose/lips. And poof Tommy is sitting on Bucks lap looking at him.
I love this 😄 this got soooo long i’m so sorry but I had Thoughts™️
So as you said, Tommy refuses to eat the cat food Buck buys, but Buck got a whiff of it when he was putting it in Tom's bowl and he doesn't blame him one bit. He gets Tom to eat canned tuna exactly one time but then he makes grilled chicken to meal prep for the week and Tom is winding himself between Buck's legs and crying. It breaks Buck's heart and he knows he's a sucker when he lets Tom have some chicken and resigns himself to looking up cat friendly recipes. He doesn't mind sharing and if he's honest, he misses having someone to cook for and to share meals with.
He does, however, draw the line at coffee. Every time he sets his cup of coffee down on the coffee table, Tom jumps on the table and tries to stick his face in the mug. He tries to put on a stern face—it's cute despite it also being annoying. "You can't have that coffee, Tom," Buck says just as Tom sticks his paw right in the mug. Buck sighs. "And now neither can I."
Buck realizes he needs to get a cat tree when he keeps finding Tom on top of the fridge and the fireplace mantle and the bathroom shelves. He learns that cats like to be high up. What concerns him is how often Tom climbs up high just to jump off whatever surface he was on. He finds himself googling "does my cat have a death wish?" After the second time Tom jumps off the fridge when Buck walks in the kitchen—nearly giving him a heart attack in the process—he narrows his eyes at Tom and says, "is this about the coffee?"
Buck learns that no flat surface is safe—not only because Tom will get on it, but because he will push things off of them and onto the floor. He adds toys to his mental shopping list and decides he'll go the next day.
Tom escapes out the front door when Buck goes to get his mail. He doesn't come back right away and one hour turns into two. Buck distracts himself from worrying by cleaning and then making a cat-friendly dinner. Buck thinks maybe Tom went home to his family—despite not having a collar or being chipped, the lack of matted fur and fleas makes Buck think he must not be a stray.
Then Buck hears scratching at the front door and he runs to go open it. There on the porch is Tom—and Buck swears he looks proud—standing over a dead mouse. Buck frowns and mutters, "hell cat" but he opens the door wider and lets Tom in. He buries the mouse in the garden, but not before cleaning Tom's paws and teeth (to Buck's surprise, Tom doesn't fight him on it).
Throughout the day—and Buck can never admit this to anyone—there are little things that Tom does that remind him of Tommy. He curls up on Buck's hoodie that Tommy always used to wear. He sits on Buck's left side when they're on the couch together. Buck's been sleeping on what he considers Tommy's side of the bed and on the first night, he gets up to go to the bathroom and when he comes back, Tom's taken the left side of the bed. Buck assumes it's because the spot is warm, but then the subsequent nights, Tom claims the spot before Buck can.
They get into a comfortable routine during Buck's days off of Tom being an absolute hellion—though Buck is grateful he's now taking his energy out on his toys and scratch posts and not his curtains (or his legs) and then being calmer as the day winds down, curling up with Buck as he watches a documentary and trading slow blinks with him, purring against his side as Buck pets him.
On Christmas, Tom has presents under his cat tree to unwrap. Rather, Buck unwraps them and Tom goes crazy over the paper and ribbons and Buck should have known he'd be more interested in that. Tom does at least appreciate the cat nip Buck got him. After the initial excitement dies down, Buck thinks about the present for Tommy in his closet, bought on a whim (or as a push to his future self to finally call Tommy).
Tom's nudging Buck's hand because he dared to not pay attention to him. Buck sniffles and scratches under his chin. "Sorry, bud, it's not you—I just really wish Tommy was here."
Tom makes a trilling sound Buck's never heard and puts his front paws on Buck's knees to put their faces together. Buck kisses his nose because how can he not? and a couple very baffling unbelievable minutes later, Buck has a lapful of a very naked Tommy.
Buck immediately covers Tommy with a fleece throw. "What the hell?"
Tommy blinks at him, opens and closes his mouth several times. He's just as surprised as Buck. "Merry Christmas?"
They decide it's best if Tommy stays with Buck for a few days to make sure his transformation back to human sticks and is without complication. It takes Tommy a bit to fully feel like his human self again. Buck politely looks away when he sees Tommy scratching behind his ear or almost licking his hand. He doesn't say a word when Tommy wanders from the couch to his bed in the middle of the night—not even when he wakes up with Tommy curled up between his legs, his head resting on Buck's stomach (neither of them comment on how long Buck spends petting Tommy's hair or the rumble Buck can feel emanating from Tommy's chest).
Buck can't help but stare when Tommy knocks something off the dining room table. He immediately looks horrified, doesn't look Buck in the eye as he grits out, "not. a. word" and flees. Buck mutters "hell cat" and tries to hide his fond smile.
(It becomes a thing that everyone is too afraid too ask about).
A few days later and Tommy is back to normal so he's going to be going home that day.
They're at the dining room table and Evan's pretending to read a book (Tommy doesn't think he even notices it's upside down), deceptively casual, Evan says, "so…interesting fact I learned about cats this week—apparently when they slow blink at you, they're saying 'i love you.' Evan looks up at Tommy then. A small smile tugs at Tommy's lips without his permission. He doesn't respond except to blink once—slowly—at Evan. Holds his gaze just long enough for Evan to return the gesture and then he looks away, though it's no use—he can't hide the grin on his face.
(This also becomes a thing nobody understands or asks about).
Evan takes him home. They're standing at Tommy's front door—neither of them making a move to go their separate ways. Tommy takes a deep breath. "I do love you, you know?"
Evan smiles. "Yeah, I know."
"I kept waiting for a better time, but I don't think there's ever going to be a time our lives aren't crazy or…cursed—"
Evan laughs. "What are you saying?"
Tommy finally opens the door. "Do you want to come in?"
Just had such a cracky idea of Tommy turning into a cat and Buck ends up taking care of him (he shows up on Buck’s porch and he doesn’t have a collar and Buck is definitely going to take him to the vet to check for a chip just as soon as he gets the chance but it’s been a week now…) and he cannot keep cat Tommy out of the Christmas tree. He’s already broken several ornaments and gotten tinsel wrapped around him and Buck’s caught him gnawing on the lights.
Buck knows he probably won’t get to keep him—just like with Blaze—but he had to call the cat something so the second day he started calling the cat Tom (It’s not weird no matter what anyone says—he looks like the cartoon cat and besides, he’d never called Tommy ‘Tom’)
What is weird is how much the cat actually does remind him of Tommy.
He sometimes gives Buck judgmental looks (which is rich coming from a creature who bathes themselves with their own tongue), Buck swears Tom sighs when Buck’s particularly wound up about something, but he stays right by Buck’s side as he chatters about his day—eyes fixed on Buck, ears twitching on occasion. The first time Buck had caught himself and felt silly (and lonely) rambling to a cat and promptly shut up, Tom had swished his tail until Buck started talking again.
That evening Buck had baked homemade cat treats (and decided he really just needed to call Tommy)
Before Buck can call Tommy, Tommy’s captain is calling him—Tommy was on vacation for a week, but now he’s missed a shift without calling in and he isn’t answering his phone. Buck knows where Tommy keeps his spare key and agrees to meet his captain at Tommy’s for a wellness check and despite Tommy’s truck being parked in the driveway, he’s not there. Buck promises to let Tommy’s captain know if he hears anything.
When Buck gets home, Tom’s curled up on the couch where he left him. Buck sits down and scratches behind his ear. He feels a bit ridiculous, but he says, “Okay, Tom…I’m not entirely sure you can meow because you haven’t made a peep since you’ve been here but if—and I cannot believe I’m saying this—if you’re Tommy, can you give me a sign?”
Can we get more of Cat!Tommy please? Like him adjusting being human again and no longer smol? And how buck just watch tommy trying to climb up the furnitures again lol.
Thanks for the ask! Cat! Tommy is so dear to me now. This is kind of just me rambling, so bear with me.
It's definitely an adjustment for both Tommy and Buck.
Tommy's horrified to find he has to make a conscious effort not to bite Evan or headbutt him. Sometimes he wakes up in the middle of the night at the end of the bed by Evan's feet.
Quite possibly the weirdest thing is going through all of the photos Evan took of him when he was a cat. He was only a cat for a week, but there's over a hundred photos of "Tom" and half of them are him and Evan together. Being jealous of himself as a cat is a feeling he's not sure what to do with.
Buck notices Tommy acting a bit cagey when he's at Buck's house, but he can't figure out why. He lived with Buck for almost two weeks and he's spent quite a few nights there even after he went back home. It isn't until he goes over to Tommy's for the first time in a few weeks that he realizes that Tommy must have been fighting the urge to sit on the counters and any elevated surface he could safely fit on. It's objectively hilarious and hopelessly endearing. Buck keeps the observation to himself.
One thing Tommy doesn't have to miss is Evan cooking for him, though he does have to remind Evan that it's okay to put garlic and onion in his food now.
A couple weeks after Christmas, Buck begins to notice a pattern—Tommy's never available on Saturdays from 2pm-5pm (not just in person, but he doesn't text or answer his phone). Buck doesn't mean to notice, it just happens. And it's fine, he doesn't need to know where Tommy is or what he's doing and he doesn't need for them to live in each other's pockets, it's just—he really misses carrying Tom around in the pouch of his cat hoodie.
One Saturday, Buck's on his way home from the store to start dinner—he's making Chicken Picatta. He's driving past a climbing gym when he spots Tommy's truck in the parking lot, so he stops and goes inside. He spots Tommy on one of the rock walls and watches him long enough that he starts to worry the staff is going to think he's some creep. Luckily, Tommy is making his way down so Buck moves closers. He waits until Tommy's feet are flat on the ground to approach him. Says, "Heyy, Tom. Whatcha doing?"
Tommy momentarily freezes. Then he turns around and gives Buck a bitchy look. "Really, Evan?"
Buck shrugs and grins. He looks around the gym. "So, is this a new hobby or—"
Tommy sighs. "I think you already know the answer to that."
"Why didn't you tell me? I would have come with you—and only teased you a little."
Tommy finishes unfastening his harness. He raises his eyebrows at Buck.
Buck rolls his eyes. "I think it's cute."
"It's not cute. It's embarrassing."
Buck lowers his voice. "You want to know what's embarrassing? Jee left a stuffed cat at my house and I've been carrying it around in my hoodie."
Tommy snorts. "I guess we both have some things to work though."
Buck takes his hand. "Yeah. For now, let's start with dinner."
Now I’m thinking about Buck not getting rid of the cat tree and toys because he’s considering getting a cat.
And one morning after him and Tommy babysat Jee and Robby, Buck’s making the bed and he finds a toy mouse in the sheets. He calls Tommy’s name and when Tommy comes in the room, Buck picks the mouse up by the tail. “Really, Tommy?”
Tommy gives him an incredulous look. “That wasn’t me. Robby was playing with the cat toys.” And both him and Jee had crawled into bed with them (thank the stars for California king beds)
“Oh sure, blame the baby who can’t defend himself.”
Tommy shakes his head and he’s on his way out of the bedroom when Buck says, “so I was thinking about smoked tuna for dinner…”
Tommy turns around and says, “bite me, sweetheart.”
Buck laughs. “Oh, like you did to me?”
Tommy narrows his eyes and tackles Buck to the bed. Buck’s still laughing, but he doesn’t get the chance to get anymore quips in…
Buck gets a whole ass cat setup like climbing tree etc and Tommy — a human man — is just like *what* but then Buck is pouting because the Tom the cat isn’t enjoying his gifts and he wants to make him happy and then boom Tommy is climbing that thing he is scratchy scratching, he is jumping to catch the cat toy because he WILL appreciate the gifts
Ahahha Buck gets him a “catmas” tree so maybe he’ll stop messing with the real tree and Tommy is soooo annoyed at how much he wants to climb around on it and in it so he resists—sticks his nose and tail up at it and just walks away.
But then he sees Buck frowning as he throws away the box the tree came in and puts away his tools and he feels bad because Buck was so excited and he took the time to put the tree together so he pads over to the tree and gives it a sniff. Buck watches him circle the tree and Tommy’s pretty sure he sees his bottom lip quiver before he asks if Tom hates it 🥹
So Tommy stops being stubborn and indulges Buck—and himself—and truth be told, he doesn’t hate it (he kind of hates that he doesn’t hate it 😅). It’s worth it to put the smile back on Buck’s face.
