1.) Give me a pairing.2.) Give me an AU setting.3.) I will write you a three-sentence fic.
its hours til the crack of dawn when he feels the world spin into focus.
blearily he rises from his bed, head and limbs heavy from lack of sleep. in his stupor he wonders why that is, as he moves to open his door. wonders what had him so busy yesterday, as he falls back into rhythm by the end of his morning routine. the sounds of his family fast asleep masks the creaks of loose floorboards Makoto fails to avoid, the snoring his father passionately denies barely enough, but enough. Makoto berates himself nonetheless, all the way to the front door, hoping he’d be able to busy himself soon. hoping the door doesnt get stuck on his way out, like it did last week. struggling to comprehend why Yamazaki Sousuke is frozen on the steps, a brown, papery something in his hands and an utmost horrified expression on his face.
it takes him a second. a few seconds.
"A … aa—"
"I, I’m …"
"Wh—"
"I just," and Sousuke pauses. the alarm in his expression gives way to something thoughtful.
(they stand in silence for a while, kind of staring at each other)
and Makoto isn’t nearly as surprised as he should be.
see, as Makoto’s consciousness comes back in timely waves, the reason why he’s lost so much sleep the past week somehow connects its dot with the aquamarine-eyed, worn-overalls-over-plaid-shirt clad boy standing before him, a brown papery something in his hands. Makoto’s seen that something before. multiple times, in fact, seated on his porch with a flower atop, waiting for its recipient to open the door. he’d seen his own name scrawled on a white, crisp little card, and upon opening the something —…what could be classified as a lumpy sort of package, he supposed— he’d always find a cute little trinket. always small enough to fit the palm of his hand, always something related to kittens. Makoto would feel everything at once— flattery (combined with the inkling that he was being courted), embarrassment (he hoped nobody else had seen), a bit of dread (what if he couldn’t return the sentiment?), a bit of guilt (he’d been picking up these nice things without giving anything in return…), and a burning curiosity (kittens?)
…now, as he and Sousuke continue trying to kind of stare at each other, he wonders, with a crooked smile he’s trying his best to suppress, if the feeling he’s feeling now is some sort of happiness.
then Sousuke breaks their strange eye-contact, pressing his lips together. Makoto’s hint of a smile broadens when he sights the gentlest blush on his face.
" … This is for you," Sousuke says simply, gruffly, pressing the package into Makoto’s hands, "I wanted to … give this one to you myself, but I,"
he’s caught in aborted hand gestures and terrible awkwardness, and Makoto really can’t help it when he starts laughing, really. Sousuke tenses immediately, but Makoto can’t stop, holding the package to his stomach as he covers his mouth with his free hand and turns his face away. (the worry bubbles in his stomach just as the laughter does, because Sousuke looks horrified again and about ready to melt into the ground)
"… Sousuke-kun," Makoto begins, face burning as he gives into his smile. he steps away from the doorway in silent invitation, " … how’d you know I liked cats?"
Sousuke gets it, Makoto thinks, when relief loosens his shoulders. he smiles right back.
