p1- Hi! Sorry, I've followed you for a little bit now and I love your blog and how it mixes art and sj things! ...I just kinda want to chime in a little on the vegan post you just reblogged if you don't mind ^^; As a low income woc who has been vegan for a year now, I just want to say that I understand that some people cannot afford to be/physically cannot be vegan, but whenever people try to bring that up it kind of ends up feeling like it's ignoring all the people who still strive to live
p2 - ethically despite these circumstances. like even if they can’t physically eat vegan for whatever reason, they could always replace things like makeup for their vegan counterparts. (WetnWild and elf are vegan and can be found at riteaid) :) Also, that last part chelsea said about how we don’t care about the rights of the immigrant workers who harvest the crops is just simply not true. Seeing how I am 1st gen latin@, assuming that I don’t care about the rights of immigrant workers is kind of
p3- insulting. and I know this is just anecdotal evidence, but there I want to say a good chunk of the vegan community (who are vegan to live ethically instead of to improve their own health) is very involved in social justice circles and usually DON’T come from places of privilege. Not to say that there aren’t vegans who are white and upperclass who shit on people who aren’t vegan and refuse to take privilege into account, because there definitely are and if I were to say those people don’t
p4 if I were to say those people don’t exist we would not be making progress. But these people usually only care about being vegan for their own health (not that there’s anything wrong with trying to be healthy, but when you shit on others for not being able to, we have a problem) and they exist just as there are TERFs in feminist circles. For Chelsea to say that we don’t care about the rights of immigrant workers is either a. taking about these privileged health crazed bigots who refuse
p5 to take intersectionalilty into account or b. just trying to make a joke, which as you know, simplifies everything Sorry! that was probably more than you bargained for and it was definitely more than I was expecting to write but oh well there you go. Sorry if this came out accusatory/aggressive in some way, I assure you I didn’t mean it and I just meant to inform. :)
The feeling I got from the post (and the reason why I reblogged it) is that the joke was targeting specifically those white, middle class people who really don’t think about their privilege, because tbh there are waaaay more of those than there really needs to be, even though (obviously) not all vegans are like that. Thanks for weighing in, though!
