So, since I've seen you say that you're always proud to see us feed ourselves, I'd like to run something by you so you can tell me if it's correct or if I should stop it before I poison myself. I tend to forget what ingredients I have, and sometimes I open them and find out they went bad since the last time I used them. I have this rule of thumb that anything plant based can't really hurt me that much, but anything animal based should be thrown out as soon as I can't tell how long it's been here
Ok, this is me wanting you to live your best possible life and be safe and healthy, and not angry at you:
ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DO THIS.
A N Y T H I N G that’s started to rot outside of very carefully set fermentation parameters* can make you extremely ill and possibly kill you. As a person for whom time is a particularly badly rendered illusion and witha tight budget, I 100% understand the frustration of having to throw out expired food, but food poisoning can kill (and at the very least, make you feel horrible) and it’s not worth getting sick as hell over $5 worth of food.
*You CAN ferment foods like cheese, beer, vinegar etc. at home but rule one of home fermenting is that if the batch goes bad you toss it and clean the shit out of everything
This Wikihow does a pretty good job comprehensively detailing how to tell if food is expired.
I dothe following to help avoid throwing food out and having stuff sit in the fridge too long:
Plan out your meals for the week so you’re not buying unecessary groceries
if you’re cooking for one or two people, go up to the butcher counter and only get as much chicken or cuts of meat as you’re going to need for that week. It’s about the same or cheaper as buying the 6 or 10 packs, and usually better cut
Staples like flour, sugar etc. are harder to buy in single-use portions but also have a longer shelf life. The’ll last longer if you can store them in an airtight container and if you live in a particularl humid/lots of bigs, you might store them in the fridge.
it’s better to buy the smaller packages of fruit/veg that are more expensive by the ounce than have bunch of soiled produce you paid for but can’t eat.
