The Cat-tivity Project: Bee City Honeybee Farm & Petting Zoo

Bee City is a petting zoo and nature center located in Cottageville, South Carolina. It offers up close encounters with farm life and exotic species.

People from all over the state come to experience Bee City’s unique park. Here, a group makes their way towards the new serval enclosure.

Bee City has two servals: a female, Savannah (left), and a male, Kufu (right). Everyday, they greet their keeper, John, to receive affectionate neck scratches.

The first task of the day is to clean the enclosures. Here, Kufu helps inspect David’s, handiwork. David is one of many volunteers that work at Bee City.

The cats are given a morning meal consisting of a commercial feline diet and raw chicken. Kufu waits patiently for his chicken before carrying it off to his favorite eating spot.

At the end of mealtime, Savannah takes her time cleaning her teeth, a rather amusing sight.

The Bee City family recently finished the construction of a new water feature for the servals. The constant improvements show a high level of commitment to exceed husbandry standards.

Thanks to the care and socialization provided by John and the Bee City staff, Savannah and Kufu are not timid or stressed, and feel at ease when curious guests come to learn about their species.

After feeding and cleaning, Savannah comes up to John for a few pets before he moves on to other work.

The loving nature of Savannah and Kufu is a result of the personal bonds nurtured by Bee City’s hands-on approach.
