"Los Tecuanes De Nueva York" @theclemente • Archive, painting, installation & photo –precious & kitsch aesthetics documenting the Tecuane dance through an immigrant inter-generational family. Telling the story of good and evil, this dance is about the unity of families who defend their land. The history of the dance is vaguely recorded by oral histories, dancers, and all from individual regions of Mexico. In part Indigenous, Tecuani is nahuatl for jaguar, and part Catholic, this dance exemplifies the survival of tradition despite colonization. Presented here is a unique & personal archive that has kept tradition, that shows pride and practices collective work by a new generation.
