Origin of Name:
The Name "Maryland" gets it's name from the wife of the English King Charles the 1st, Queen Henrietta Maria. King Charles the 1st granted a colonial charter to the Calvert Company in 1632 and named the land they he was giving a charter to "Terra Mariae" which translates into english as "Mary's Land." That was then shortened to Maryland to make one congruent word.
The word "Officially" originates from the Latin word "Officium", meaning duty, service, or office. Then, in late Latin it morphed into "Officialis", meaning "Attendant or Public Official", then into the Old French word Officiel, which finally transferred over to English to make the word official. Then the suffix "ly" was added to mean "an action carried out by an authority or by someone with the necessary authorization." The first recorded use of the word comes from around 1639.
