RAPPING ON THE DOOR OF RACISM (VOL. 72, ISSUE 1)
Australia is a nation boasting multiculturalism and opportunity, but with a flourishing music industry that claims progressiveness, why is the face of our hip hop scene still white?
Scott Witter for Catalyst Magazine
The First Feminist Magazine
There is no denying that niche content is slowly becoming the secret to success in the magazine industry, but how about a magazine dedicated to feminism? Catalyst the world’s first feminist magazine is launching its first issue this month, offering readers a glimpse into the reality of untraditional love and its growing presence in our modern world.
The magazine features editorials and interviews with unordinary couples who aced the wedding game. Catalyst gets the details on the preparation and planning that went into their marriage, from mixologists to wedding planners and insight from the parents-of-the-brides.
Catalyst’s website says, "Catalyst Wedding Magazine takes a critical look at weddings without sacrificing visual integrity. Catalyst holds the position that there is no such thing as 'the perfect wedding.' The written content is intellectually engaging (sometimes sarcastic), while the visual quality is stunning on the page and features under-represented communities throughout."
Is the feminist audience large enough and dedicated enough to bring success to the magazine? There is no doubt that it will attract attention from all angles however, feminist or not. Also, is it wrong to qualify a feminist magazine as a niche title? Regardless, I think the same strategy is at play here. Catalyst has the potential to gain dedicated readers and frequency simply for the one-of-a-kind subject matter, and the extreme relevance of the issue at hand. Just as same-sex marriage has become a necessary acceptance in our modern world, Catalyst may become a necessary read for those within the niche.

Shane Meadows’ new film, This is England, provides a useful opportunity to explore the emerging debate over English identity.
The sociopathic Combo – a racist raging at the world, and a terrifyingly believable performance from Stephen Graham – enters this comfortable scene of bonding and supposedly harmless petty vandalism.
