Horse training on the beaches of the Belfast Coastal Reserve in south-west Victoria has been a long-held tradition...

But when Michelle Payne won the Melbourne Cup in 2015 and trainer Darren Weir attributed the win to his beach training regime, things changed. The massive increase of horses on the beach began to cause problems for not only the environment and wildlife, but everyone else who claimed the land was theirs to use.

Terra Publica unpacks the issues of this 20km coastline, which reaches far beyond horses on a beach. How does public land ownership actually work? Who owns it in the first place? And how do these owners decide what’s right for everyone that wants to use it?

This podcast is a collaboration between RMIT University and the Victorian National Parks Association.
