     relief floods through alec so fast that his knees nearly give out under him when he hears magnus’ voice. turning, he practically runs across the room to the older man, grabbing him into a nearly crushing hold. “by the angel... i thought...” he can’t continue the thought, tucking his face into magnus’ neck with a soft sigh. “what happened? i’ve been worried sick!”

Magnus,

The fact that you are reading this at all means that something has gone unexpectedly wrong.  I’m equally certain that you will have initially refused to be the executor of my Will, and tried to pawn the job off on Catarina.  

As furious as you undoubtedly are, read this through to the end.  As my Will states, you are to inherit nearly everything I possess-- save a few items of sentimental value that I’m trusting you to distribute. 

Among those inheritances is the skull of Hrothbert of Bainbridge.  It’s a small mercy that I can’t see you rolling your eyes from the afterlife.  Take good care of him, Magnus-- and keep him out of the Clave and Council’s hands. 

If these are to be my final words to you, I suppose it’s only right to close with the sentiment I have always felt, and rarely spoken.

You are stronger than you believe, and you will endure this until time takes the rough edges from your grief.  Knowing you has been one of the greatest joys of my life, and I’m certain the afterlife will be abominably quiet without you.

Take care of Catarina and Raphael, even when they’re too stubborn to realize they need it.

Ragnor

The box from the estate of the late Ragnor Fell had been delivered to Magnus by portal, and a very sullen member of the Council.  It had taken them more than a week to decide if they were going to honor Ragnor’s Will-- many had protested that Bob’s skull should be locked away somewhere quiet, and safe.  

A fitting punishment for the deeds he’d done in life.

But Ragnor had friends among the Council, though he’d repeatedly refused their offers to join.  And now the wooden box, warded to the Gods, and locked with heavy chains, was sitting on Magnus’ desk.

Arriving at Magnus’ loft had been the usual errand for Alec lately. With cases that required Magnus’ profound skills, he became an important asset to the New York Institute especially to the eldest of the Lightwoods.

 The loft’s entrance door seemed to be open although at first, Alec hesitated to barge right in. “Magnus?”

 He looked around, confounded by the stack of jars that piled up on his desk and bookshelves. The smell of incense lingered around the loft pleasantly.

 He sure was a man of taste.
