That's about as much of a response as I was expecting. To be fair, you threw Greenstock Princess Bride AU at me WITH None Pizza Left Beef.
I KNOW MY AUDIENCE. IT'S WHAT I DO. AND AT 3AM I GET PRETTY GOOD AT BREAKING MY AUDIENCE. YOU KNOW HOW YOU COULD'VE PREVENTED THIS? BY NOT MAKING TEEN WOLF HAPPEN. ALL YOUR FAULT.
I actually have a graphics related ask for you! How do you get clean/smooth crops of characters? I'm just starting to attempt making graphics and whenever I'm cutting characters out of their backgrounds for silhouettes or whatever, the edges are always really choppy, or messy, and they look awful. Any tips on what can make the edges look a little better?
Warning: Semi-long answer.
You are in luck because I am currently cutting out people hahaha.
I have 2 methods for cutting stuff out in PS.
Pen Tool (I’ve been favouring this one lately)
Polygonal Lasso Tool (I’ve been using this one the longest)
The Pen Tool (shortcut P) allows for easier adjustments and more specificity when it comes to curves. However, it can be a little tricky because it’s actually supposed to be for creating shapes. I suggest watching this tutorial for a quick overview of how to use the Pen Tool.
Now with the second option, I know a lot of people use the regular Lasso Tool, but I feel like it’s too free reigning (and you have to hold down the mouse button which is super lamesauce). The Polygonal Lasso Tool allows for easier control but it doesn’t allow you to curve. So the trick is to click in small increments. Watch this video for help (it’s low quality so beware).
A tip for having a cleaner cut is to zoom in closely and cut more than you need to.
As you can see above, my line cuts out a little of the shape. If you don’t do this, you’ll have a weird border.
Another tip is to use the Refine Edge tool (especially if you’re using Polygonal Lasso).
THIS HAS SAVED MY ASS SO MANY TIMES WHEN IT COMES TO HAIR.
First you start off with your selection, then you hit the Refine Edge button.
Okay, now what you do is you brush the edges so that it creates a gradient and fades out the background. Watch this video from 3:00 and on. This is the result.
It looks fuzzy right here, but you can put that on any colour background and it won’t have harsh or jagged edges. This tool is like the best fucking thing in the world.
I have no idea if this made any sense, but I hope it helps a little bit.
Imagine. You're putting your straw into a Capri Sun. You blink. Your straw goes through both sides of the Capri Sun. You blink again. Your Capri Sun is gone entirely.
Shit I forgot to say in the other message that He Gets Me High is seriously my favourite story I read in 2012. Of all the stuff I read, that story was the deadliest. Absolutely fantastic.
Thank you! I think I might love this story best too for reasons. The lovely Jinxy has recorded a podfic so that should be up any day now.
