Also really love that usually with the Black Family With a Stepparent trope, the Stepparent is usually white, the Loving White Stepmom, the Cool White Stepdad, but Waves has Renee Elise Goldsberry as the Stepmom who has raised her husband’s children like her own since they were little.

Like the line after Tyler yells that she isn’t his mom bc his biological mom is dead and she says “I am your mother”??? She doesn’t rise to the bait and say anything hurtful back, she establishes herself as his mother and tries to deescalate the situation.

And then when she and Ronald are arguing she she goes “I’m grieving!!!” because her only son was just sent to prison for thirty years to life.
