As @csopie’s show To Be Seen arrives at the @royal_scottish_academy in Edinburgh, we return to the pages of our most recent issue, where she and Maggie Nelson dissect the intersection of life, work and identity as reflected across six decades of her creativity.
The exhibition has travelled from the @nationalportraitgallery and presents nearly 80 portraits – of herself, her mentors and collaborators, of queer communities, schoolchildren, surfers, protesters and more – made over the course of her three-decade career. By extending the formal language of portraiture historically reserved for those of celebrity and status to subjects outside of that realm, Opie challenges viewers to consider who has traditionally been represented in art, and who goes unseen.
“I love friendship and I love history and if something’s not working for me within a friendship or within a history, I try to fix it,” said Opie on knowing when to let go of things that no longer serve us as she neared her 65th birthday.
