How do you go about drawing goblins? How do figure out how to color them, or what is the essence that makes them distinct?
There are honestly many many ways to draw goblins, which is part of why I love them so much. I’ve seen a lot of styles that I like but I can only really speak to my own style.
As far as color, the base in generally a shade of green and what shade is totally up to you. You can go vivid and vibrant or dull and ashen and any value of either or in between! From there, as far as hair and eyes and clothing I’m a fan of color theory and going with A) what speaks to you personally and pleases your eye and b) complementary colors! A color wheel can help you out there if you’re not familiar.
As for drawing, I start out very similarly to drawing a human face. Rough circle, added jawline, lines that split it roughly in half then half again then once more for the placement of the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears.
From there I add the facial features- sharp teeth, nose, eyes... and again there are so many ways to go with that. Big cartoony eyes, little beady eyes, full lips, thin lips, no lips, long nose, button nose... you can do whatever looks right to you! The key is really to keep playing around with it till you like what you see. Then of course gor which, again, can be any texture, shap, or style you like!
For a full body pic it’s similar, really. Chest, hips, and head all start as circles, but unlike with humans I make the head circle about the same size as the chest and hips. The upper arms and thighs are sketched in as stumps, shorter than I would for a human, with the forearms being longer. Really it’s all about sketchy circular/oval shapes as the base, getting everything in place before you add details like clothing, hair, and features. Which, again, can be just about anything!
What makes it gobliny is just condensing the limbs and a bigger head. I also do bigger, 3 fingered hands usually with pointed nails.
I hope this helps! Really it’s all about playing around and finding what looks and feels right to you for that particular goblin!
