Ingrith doesn’t run to Caroline, but she comes close. There’s a flurry of heavy skirts as she crosses the room towards her, and she slams into her with a little more force than she intended. She buries her face in Caroline’s shoulder, fingers twisting in expensive fabric, and she croaks, ‘thank you for coming’. She’s determined not to cry, at least not yet, but she clings to Caroline like her life depends on it. Maybe it does.
