Causes.com
It's no secret that I hate hate HATE celebrating my birthday. However a few years ago I decided to take advantage of Causes.com's creative "Wish" feature to direct the attention towards nonprofits that I want to support by fundraising! Speaking of birthdays, I'd constantly hear stories of how my mom couldn't even afford having a cake for her's as a child whose family lived in poverty. She was one of the lucky ones as years later, her parents and siblings managed to pull themselves out and now live comfortable lives. However, not many families can share the success story of my mom's. So this year, I once again hope to help raise funds for Gawad Kalinga, an anti-poverty organization based in the Philippines who utilizes a multi-pronged strategy (the 7-point vision) to help uplift at least 5 million families from the depths of poverty by 2024. Help me help GK achieve its goals! (Photo courtesy of Jose Montelibano. Team USA at the annual Bayani Challenge 2011 build in Bantayan Island, Cebu! I'm the 2nd from the right. ;))
causes.com petition
We now have a third petition on another popular petition site called causes.com. We're not sure how successful it will be, but one of our Facebook fans suggested this and we thought it would be worth trying.
If you have not yet signed the change.org or care2 petitions, please go to this link to sign our new one. You do have to have a Facebook account to sign it, but it doesn't ask you for much information on the actual petition - just your name and zip code.
Thank you for your continued support with our project! We're going to try to plan as many events and activities as we can throughout the year to spread the word about our efforts.
E-petitions
I don't mind signing online petitions from time to time even knowing they probably won't do a whole lot, but I find Causes.com to be highly annoying.
Mostly because it forces me to connect my FB account to sign in.
No, let me make an account the manual way instead of having to run my account through something that will make me feel concerned for my privacy.
Donate your Birthday to a Charity
There are many important events in your lifetime that lend themselves as great charitable opportunities. In today’s age of interaction through social media, it can be as easy as “Starting a Cause,” through Causes.com on Facebook! Open the Causes application in Facebook, create your cause, and post it to your timeline. You will likely get support from friends and family on your matter and the contributions are often surprising.
In 2010, Jada and Will Smith gave up their birthdays for Charity:Water. 100% of the money raised helped to fund the purchase of two drilling rig fleets for the 2011 September Campaign.
It is especially important to choose the charity you will support with purpose. If there is a cause that you are particularly passionate about, it will be especially easy for you to persuade your friends and family to support you in your efforts. Sites such as CharityBirthday can help you choose a legitimate organization that will use 100% of your funds to help the world. This year, make a donation in your name and encourage the support of your family and friends.
What do you do when you see misinformation on the internet?
I spent a while last night and this morning making this up. Â Please take the poll and please pass it on. Â There's a facebook share button at the bottom of this post. Â If you click on it you'll share this blog post on Facebook. Â If you don't use Facebook (and I know there are a few holdout reading this), please pass on the poll any way you like. Â Getting this message out is an interest of mine, which you already know if you've been reading my blog. Â Thanks.

The Immunization Initiative and the rest of it.
I've been working on two causes at causes.com. The first one was The Anti-Anti-Vaccine Campaign. The intention was and is to encourage people to challenge anti-vaccine propaganda that shows up on their Facebook newsfeed. It's still alive but I haven't worked out how to promote it very effectively. The people at causes.com said it was too negative and appealed to too small a segment of the population for them to add it to their featured causes. I still think it's worthwhile and I'll come up with better ways to get the message out there sooner or later.
The second cause I've named The Immunization Initiative. It's taking a more positive spin. I've started by promoting the idea that getting a flu shot is not about avoiding the flu, not really. It's about not passing the flu on to someone who might die of it. This cause is working better. I started with a pledge. I added a quiz. Then I added a poll. The poll has been voted on by almost 600 people. It seems that something is working.
So today I came across this video. I've added it to the cause here.
Please let me know what you think of all of it.

From Cause:
Some kids placed typical christmas strong firecracker in the mouth of this animal and made sure he could not open it. The world is like this. To these kids it must have been a macabre fun for a few minutes and then they continued with their life like nothing happened. To this animal his life ended during those minutes, with a pain so deep that is better to forget. If you are against the mistreatment of animals, sign this so we can get justice for this poor dog!
Please pass on and get justice for this poor dog!
