United States War Between the States, Captain Walter S. Newhall of the 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry leads a handful of troopers into the the midst of the entire 13th Virginia Cavalry, at the battle of Gettysburg , July 3, 1863. Newhall was speared in the face by the Confederate flag bearer and unhorsed but survived the incident.
