Let's be honest though, reality doesn't matter THAT much. Though I do miss a lot of those pairings and regret that the two long lasting popular ones I find the most droll are still going strong.
Reality doesn’t matter re: CAN you read/write those pairings, but it has greatly affected the number of people who DO read/write those pairings, seeing as most of them haven’t had new fics in years (or like, have one a year). The only two popular ones that survived (ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh) are for pairings where the players still play together. As soon as the guys move teams/retire, fics drop off. It’s not like in a tv show fandom where you still have new people who watch the series and ship pairings from the early seasons, in hockey fandom people just disappear. I’m getting the impression that the old fans aren’t around as much/have moved on to new pairings, and I don’t think new fans read these fics. I was wondering today if newer fic fans actually even know the story with Mike Richards, seeing as he hasn’t played in the NHL since 2015-16.

I know people still read them (and a lot of other old pairings that used to be popular), but I think that there’s less readers than there used to be and writers have basically disappeared. Either they’ve left fandom or they’ve moved on to new pairings. Half of the tags I look at, I’m the most recent person who wrote in them and that’s so sad.

I know it’s so sad. I have like a paddleboat of all of my old pairings that nobody writes anymore. And seeing as I have literally zero care for fics about anyone from the 2015 draft class or later (sorry Jack), I have extremely limited fic reading options.

Tbh I would read an infinite number of fics of Mike Richards living a happy peaceful life fishing in Kenora. Every time someone writes a fic like that (and there are very few) my soul feels better.
That’s sucky. :( How did they have them displayed? Is it the sort of thing where they normally remove old ones or did they single out his? If the latter then that’s super shitty. And part of why my Mike Richards fic I will finish in ten years focuses on how Mike went from being so beloved in Philadelphia and in LA to being literally erased from memory (like at the arena) and how he copes with that. Except with werewolves.
