One slight problem I’m having with The Code is there doesn’t seem to be any prominent “new” character. In How I Met Your Mother, the show started with Robin showing up. In JAG, the CBS seasons started with Bud and Mac joining the Admiral’s group. In Fringe they were all sort of meeting/reuniting with each other. In TBBT, Penny was joining an existing group, in B99 it was Holt, in The Good Place they were all meeting each other, in The Mentalist it was Van Pelt, in Scorpion Paige and Ralph were joining an existing family, in Trial and Error Josh was new to town, etc.
Here, there isn’t any character that’s navigating the dynamics and forming them along with the audience. The impression here is all these characters have been doing what they’re doing with the people they’re doing it with for a while. I’m jumping into an established group and it makes me feel as if I’ve missed at least one previous episode.
