Time Warner Cable vs. CBS Corporation Customer Update

As of Friday, August 2nd, Time Warner still had CBS Corporation blacked out for millions of users across the country. Time Warner posted a statement on Twitter to its followers:

CBS Pulled From Time Warner Cable, CBS CEO: ‘We Are Now At War’

As a Yankees fan, I am still recovering from the YES Network and Cablevision war during the entire 2002 season resulting in fans not being able to watch any games on television. This was the beginning of a long era of blackout threats affecting millions nationwide. 

It's hard not to be mad at both parties involved in a network-distribution war. Average Americans have a strict budget and expect the channels we pay for. And we expect these media typhoons to get off their million dollar thrones and do their job.

In the recent major dispute between Time Warner and CBS Corporation, I have been trying to keep an open mind about the viewpoints of each side.Time Warner Cable (TWC) said in a statement:

“The outrageous demands for fees by CBS Corporation have forced Time Warner Cable to remove several of its networks. We offered to pay reasonable increases, but CBS’s demands are out of line and unfair – and they want TWC to pay more than others.”

I can understand Time Warner's frustration with CBS Corporation. Although I haven't found any word on why CBS would single out Time Warner, Time Warner is not just blacking out on one network channel. CBS Corporation owns CBS news affiliate stations, Showtime, The Movie Channel, FLIX, CBS Sports Network and the TV Guide Network. The risk of losing the profits from CBS outweighs the benefits of standing up for principle.

Is that what the television industry comes down to today? That the people in charge of television programming care more for their million dollar paycheck and bonuses rather than the bringing entertainment into America's homes? 

I still think they are both completely unreasonable. This war needs to be settled before the new season starts in September. I can imagine the war that will start between New Yorkers and both Time Warner and CBS if we do not get our NFL Sunday football and missing out Dexter's second part of this season.
