Hello! Welcome to my blog :)

Hello, my name is Lauren O’Connell and welcome to my professional blog detailing my learning and development whilst in University study. I am a third year BSc (Hons) Television and Broadcasting Student at the University of Portsmouth, and throughout the year I will be blogging about the roles I have taken on, research I have done and some of the learning and technical details about the equipment I have used. I hope these paragraphs manage to capture your attention and provide an interesting read! Throughout my third year of University, my peers and I were allocated specialist teams and asked to produce an half an hour length live show every Friday at 12pm for a television channel that is embedded within our course curriculum entitled Creative and Cultural Industries TV, or CCI TV for short. The shows produced go out live to the CCI TV Channel website, YouTube and on the Portsmouth Big Screen situated on Guildhall Square in Portsmouth.

Each team were allocated a support group to help fill all the roles within the studios for the live broadcast days. Within the University, we have three studios; the CCI Studio, the Eldon Broadcast Hub and the Rotunda, which for third year, the teams only use the CCI Studio and the Eldon Broadcast Hub for Live broadcasts. As stated before, we were allocated specialist teams. Overall, there are 6 teams and each team was allocated a colour (Red, Green, Orange, Yellow, Blue and Black). My team was allocated the colour Green. The shows produced are of three different topic areas. ‘CCI Live’, is a magazine TV programme made for the Creative and Cultural Industries Faculty, otherwise known as CCI. Within this show, it features CCI news and upcoming events in aim to target a wide audience. The show is targeted at all CCI students and staff, though we also try and target the public so they get an insight into what the faculty does. ‘Eye on Portsmouth’, is targeted not only at the University students but also the Portsmouth public. The show is a collaboration between the University of Portsmouth and the City of Portsmouth. The TV programme is based on local news, information and upcoming events within the Portsmouth Area. Finally, ‘World on a Plate’, is TV programme where you learn about different cultures, and where everyone gets an insight on sports, food and other material that they may not have known came from a certain culture. CCI LIVE 24-10-2014

In this episode of CCI Live we introduce the new CCI Radio manager and what his plans for the future are. We have live interviews with new lecturer in broadcasting Katie Still, and two students talking about their self employed placement year. Arthur I Miller, a professor of art and science gave us an interview on his views of the subject and the basis of what he covered in his public lecture.

20th February 2015

Not only is today my last chance to present for CCI TV's student shows, but it's also the Television and Broadcasting; class of 2012-2015's, last ever live show.

For this weeks Eye on Portsmouth I got to co-host an interview with the over 40's, bodybuilding word-champion; Ian Hendy, Steve from the RSPCA Stubbington Ark and play with dogs.

'Never work with animals or children.'

The interviews today both went extremely well, especially as my role was to ask un-scripted questions off the back of the interviewees answers. Luckily, Ian Hendy was a very interesting person to talk to and I was genuinely excited to conduct an interview with him to find out more about body-building and his research in plants.

After both interviews and a few bad puns about dogs, it was time to introduce our furry friends. One of the dogs really didn't want to be on the camera in the rehearsals, but luckily, the owner of the puppy managed to calm her down in time for the live show and surprisingly, the segment went relatively well.

It was sad to say goodbye for the last time but as one door closes, another one opens and I'm excited about where my future in TV could lead.

I've learnt a lot about myself as a host and a presenter and it's still something I'm determined to pursue in the future and something that I still thoroughly enjoy, which for me, is what it's all about.

Supporting for the last time.

6th February 2015

Today is the teams last chance to support another group, the show being Eye on Portsmouth. Today, I was doing a dual role of floor-managing and camera operating, upstairs in the CCI Studio.

After setting up my talk-back and turning the lights and camera on in the studio, I took directions from the show's director on the framing of both cameras, which would be static throughout the show, so once in place, my role would be strictly floor-managing. Focused, in-frame and the iris set to 4, the cameras were ready.

The live show went well and I feel my role of floor-manager was perfect. I managed to get the presenter to stick to timings, camera changes and even made a friend in the process. All in all, I now feel that I could take on a job as a floor-manager in a TV studio and do it to a professional standard for any broadcasting company.

Hot and Spicy script.

15th-19th January 2015

On the 15th of January I started writing the first draft for World on a Plate. However, before I could do this, I needed a running order from the director.

Upon asking for this running order, I learnt that the director wasn't sure of how to complete a running order and didn't really have too much of a vision for the schedule of the show. As this piece of documentation was something that was effecting me whilst incomplete, I offered to fill out the running order. After receiving a list of segments and timings for the show, I filled out the document and sent it over to my director to get the go ahead for the script.

After getting the go ahead, I began filling out different parts of the script and finding ways of merging the segments together.

Hello and welcome to a very hot and spicy edition of World on a Plate via the CCI TV Channel! Thanks for tuning in! This programme has a very ambitious focus in that it features people, cultures and food from all of the world.

I then uploaded the first draft to google drive and received feedback such as;

'Talk about safe practice whilst handling chilli's' along with a few word changes, which I managed to research and change as the script was being viewed.

Safe practice included;

Please remember if you’re going to try this at home make sure you have some milk, ice cream, coconut juice or yogurt at the ready, but not water as that will spread the burning sensation. Some other things to remember are to wash your hands after handling a hot chilli or pepper and do not touch your eyes or any other sensitive parts of the body.

On the 19th of January one of our VT's 'The chilli countdown' had to be dropped. This caused a few issues as the information involved in the VT was needed in the programme content. Luckily, there was time left in the script to add the chilli countdown in before the chilli challenge. The script was updated and ready to put onto the auto-cue.

Filming Fajitas.

14th January 2015

So the Christmas break is over and we're back to filming for our final show; World on a Plate. After a group meeting we've decided our roles and this time around I'm going to be camera operating for one of the VT's, script-writing and presenting on the day.

First up, I proposed the idea of a 'Hot and spicy' edition of world on a plate, to the group. This would include, chilli's, peppers, spicy food and countries typically involved with spices (Mexico, India, etc..) The idea was passed and our first VT would involve a 'chef' cooking fajitas, with the flavouring made from different spices.

For this VT we would need a kitchen and as no-one else in the group had a suitable space, I offered up mine. For this VT I volunteered to camera operate as it's something I hadn't done much of this year. The night before the shoot I picked the camera (a Sony EX1) up from my producer; in order to familiarise myself with it. I decided to do this so I knew exactly how to use the camera and make sure that I wasn't rusty or relying on other group members to refresh my memory on the day (which would cause a delay and be unprofessional.)

Luckily, I had remembered how to use the camera so when the day of the shoot came, I was comfortable and confident in my role. Before the shoot started I made sure to format the camera to wipe the existing footage from the memory card, make sure it was in focus and white balanced and also checked there wasn't any gain appearing in the picture. For most of the shoot I kept my camera on a wide shot of the chef in the kitchen, however, during the shoot I had to follow the chef from one side of the kitchen to the other and after the shoot I gathered close ups of the spices and food.

Unfortunately, the shoot lacked direction and none of us were really sure of the aim of it, as it hadn't really been planned. The director was also busy listening to the sound, so I took it upon myself to help out and directed a majority of the shoot and decided what the chef would be presenting and saying to the camera, including arranging some of the shots with the other camera operator.

Although this may have come across that I was taking over, with a lack of direction I felt that someone needed to step up to the mark and organise the rest of the team, as at one point, everyone was stood around looking lost.

This shoot has taught me that I am fully capable of working a camera, however, I enjoy roles where I can organise a team and give direction more than I do the technical aspects of a shoot.

All in all, the shoot was fun and I gained confidence in camera operating, giving myself a skill in one of the technical aspects of live TV.

Support on a plate.

5th December 2014

Today it was our groups turn to support the team going live. As we receive our roles by the other teams producer and I floor-managed for their first show I was given that role again.  

As this is the third time I have taken on this role I was very confident within myself. I feel that practice makes perfect, so by continuing to practice my skills within floor-managing it will become one of my strongest roles come graduation and something I may look in to pursuing in the future.

Today's show had three different interviews with a variety of guests and set-ups. This involved lots of camera movements and strict timings for each segment, so taking advice from my previous post, I made sure I was in the eye-line of the presenter at all times in order for the timings to be portrayed throughout the show. As there was a lot happening in the Eldon Broadcast Hub today, it was vital that each guest was in place with time to spare, so as one interview ended, I made sure the next guest was brought on to set and ready for the interview.
