A curt reply not meant to be harsh or rude. Josephina could make of it what she would, its true purpose of giving an honest opinion couldn’t be denied. How could he tell her otherwise? Duty among other things continue to drive him to do the same. Physical injuries could heal, if not at least be surmounted with time, but a wound to a person’s very core may never heal.
Fear and despair were better weapons than any tome, sword, or ax. They dug deep into their victim’s being and crushed them without remorse. A man could ride into battle the strongest warrior, but go down as easily as a wingless bird if he lacked a reason to live. That said, steeling one’s heart and protecting it wasn’t nearly as simple as the majority believed.
“However, you would do well to be careful. If you guard yourself too much, you may just lose everything in the end.”
Something feels familiar about those words, but Leon decides against dwelling on it. At this point, it was impossible to properly recall what he was being reminded of, possibly an effect of having let go of much. Regardless, he meant what he said the same way he did any other advice.
