Sinead O’Connor rages against the Mainstream
Until recently, Sinead O’Connor had stayed relatively unknown to the average millennial. Was it not for her controversial outbursts she might still be.
But never one to shy away from the perverse, in her most recent rant the ‘Nothing Compares’ singer referred to Kim Kardashian as a ‘C*nt’ and inadvertently blamed Rolling Stones for the demise of music.
It was her disgust at ‘Conveyer Belt Pop’ that led her to pen an Open Letter to Miley Cyrus back in 2013 - warning her of the dangers of ‘Hollywood’ (though now that I think of it I don’t recall her expressing any disgust at Miley’s September ‘13 Stones cover). To surmise, O’Connor basically called Cyrus the biggest hindrance to the feminist movement in a hundred years.
Previously in 1991, O’ Connor also featured on the magazine cover but that signified the end of an era. An Era which saw RS host the likes of timeless musicians including Kurt Cobain, Micheal Jackson, Bjork, Metallica, Prince and Jimi Hendrix. Eventually over the years its lost its core Rock ‘n’ Roll audience and took the approach to embrace modern culture, as opposed to the alternative scenes they had specialized in.
Whilst O’connors message maybe be crass, and her opinion may be widely considered as outdated, atleast all these years later she remains true to her convictions as a feminist. and as an anarchists. Too often we are afraid to call society out on its ugly self for fear of alienation. Well behaved women seldom make history. Perhaps surprisingly, that’s what they all have in common.
