CELESTIAL NORTH - YARROW
Celestial North shares ‘Yarrow’ an atmospheric soundtrack rooted in nature.
Celestial North has shared ‘Yarrow’, a haunting atmospheric "botanical” soundtrack. For fans of Nils Frahm, Olafur Arnalds or Sigur Ros, this reflective and meditative piece gently sways with a wash of pianos and sighing melodies. It’s a tantalizing other side of Celestial North’s artistry and a teaser for her album released later this year.
She says of the song: ‘I often think in ‘music’. My thoughts are usually awash with colours and sounds. I was sitting trying to meditate, or contemplate, beside the yarrow patch in my garden. I was finding it difficult to articulate how I was feeling and started to feel a bit frustrated. I decided to sit quietly and start again. I realised that I didn’t really have any words to write down as such but I did have a tune playing in my head.
I decided to record this tune on my piano and added some other elements that I felt benefitted the song — a bodhran drum, a choir, the rustling of the yarrow patch and the roses recorded from my garden and some simple electronic sounds. This botanical soundscape is representative of how I felt whilst I was sitting with the yarrow and the tune played on the piano is the tune that was playing in my head whilst sitting with the plant."
It follows the success of the “wonderful space pop” (4 Songs and a dream Podcast) of ‘When The Gods Dance’ — which received airplay and praise from the likes of Roddy Hart at BBC Radio Scotland, Jim Gellatly of Amazing Radio and various BBC Introducing Shows. The gorgeous follow up 'The Nature of Light' which featured in Under The Radar and Snack Magazine.
Hailing from Edinburgh, Scotland Celestial North is a talented, multi-faceted musician and songwriter with her songs regularly played on the BBC Introducing show. Her reworking of R.E.M.’s ‘Nightswimming’ - recorded for a God Is In the TV Zine charity album last year, received national radio play with BBC Scotland’s Roddy Hart proclaiming it “Majestic”. The release was included in Bandcamp’s Essential Releases with ‘Nightswimming’ chosen as the Editorial Director’s personal highpoint.
Following a run of early singles Celestial North was touted by Under The Radar and God Is In The TV as 'One to watch in 2021' and one of the 'finest new acts for 2021', Celestial North is currently recording her debut album which will be released in October.
"Viking Dreamfolk to dance and soar too. a dream-pop classic that fans of Bjork, Ionnalee/Iamamiwhoami and Bat For Lashes will adore." Higher Plane Music

Born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, Celestial North can be found wandering south of the border in Kendal where she now lives with her family, surrounded by fells and the beauty of nature. Her Scottish roots are anchored in her music and her love of wilderness, mystery and the spirit of the Beltane is evident in her songs. Having taught herself various instruments, with the encouragement of a Bowie and Flamenco loving father, she became interested in experimenting with different recording techniques and more unusual and primitive instruments. Hours and hours were spent with her husband, co-producer and chief drummer Woody, recording blocks of ice being hit, or chains being banged inside buckets, or storms passing over their old stone house on the hill. A dulcimer, a Bodhran drum and a piano were gifted to them during lockdown which had a huge impact on the sounds being created at home.

‘GodIsInTheTV' - “Enveloping and wondrous. Swelling and spiralling gaze pop that’s punctured by big hearted vocals and soaring melodies. Superb riffing, brisk percussive elements featuring Woody from Sea Power on drums and epic choruses laced with a bittersweet quality of the hope and pain of living. Wonderful stuff!”
Under The Radar - “Celestial North has been making some of the most luscious, ethereal sounds over the past couple of years. "Distant Life" is a shimmering masterclass in elegant dream pop”.
