A 29-year-old mother has been arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of her baby daughter, who died after the suspect tried to breastfeed her.

On Nov. 4, police responded to a call about unconscious 8-month-old twins at a home in San Jose, California. When officers arrived, one of the twins was not breathing, according to a news release from the San Jose Police Department. Both babies were taken to hospital, where one was pronounced dead in intensive care the following day, according to the press release.

Last week, Celina Juarez, the twins' mother, was arrested and charged with manslaughter, the San Jose Police Department said. According to the police department, Juarez was experiencing an undisclosed medical emergency early in the investigation and was hospitalized until Nov. 16, when he was charged. Court documents obtained by KRON 4 identified the deceased twin as Melani. Juarez allegedly told officers she was trying to breastfeed her twins when they lost consciousness, KRON 4 reports, citing court documents. She said she held Melani to her chest, "didn't let her breathe," the outlet reports, and was "frustrated" when the baby didn't "snap." The suspect allegedly told officers she held Melani to her chest for several minutes, then after the baby was not breathing she laid her unconscious body on the bed and lifted the second twin and did the same, reports KRON 4 under Citation of Court Documents. According to KRON 4, Juarez and her mother attempted chest compressions and CPR on the twins. When Juarez's brother got home, he called 911.
