The Library of Celsus at Ephesus, Turkey

I just love #historicalsites! The amazing detail, compared to the “cookie cutter” buildings made nowadays! ⁣ The #CelsusLibrary is #beautiful and arguably the most recognisable building in the city, as it’s the picture used to advertise #Ephesus as an #excursion by most #travel companies. ⁣ ⁣ Built in 117 AD, the structure had two stories. The three entrances on the ground floor where framed by the #Corinthian style columns. Between these columns are replicas of the four statues that once stood here. The statues are Sophia (for wisdom), #Episteme (for knowledge), #Ennoia (for intelligence) and Arete (for valor). ⁣

The library itself could hold more than 12,000 scrolls. ⁣ ⁣ Governor Gaius Julius #Celsus Polemaeanus is said to have been buried below the ground floor, which is where the library gets its name. ⁣
