Philip Parris “Phil” Lynott (August 20, 1949 – January 4, 1986) was an Irish-born musician and songwriter best known as Thin Lizzy’s lead vocalist, bassist, and songwriter. You might be familiar with the band’s biggest single, “The Boys Are Back In Town.” The song is often used in commercials, films, and television when a group of guys is having fun or doing something. I was always familiar with the band Thin Lizzy, but upon listening to them, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the lead singer was a black Irishman from Ireland, where he grew up with his mother. He was also a lead singer who played the bass, which is rare in rock music. After he became comfortable playing the bass, he formed Thin Lizzy. The band had moderate success with their “bluesy hard rock” sound. Some consider them one of the ancestors of heavy metal. He went on to form other bands and published a poetry book. I guess you could say Lynott falls into the category of Jimi Hendrix or Arthur Lee (Google him) because they were black guys playing heavy rock before it became more mainstream, like it is today. Lynott was a great songwriter who influenced those familiar with his music.
