Founded by George Smith in 1914, the Smith Ranch has been raising cattle in Bent County for a hundred years, but it was no easy feat. Faced with environmental and economic challenges, the family persisted year after year, eventually passing the farm to George's son Mahlon, who had sixteen children with his wife, Ann. Today, the ranch is operated by Mahlon's son Jeff and his family, who created a custom hay business to safeguard the ranch during times of drought and high feed prices. Celebrate the Smith family's century of hard work and ingenuity at the 2014 Colorado Centennial Farms ceremony on Friday, August 22, at the State Fair in Pueblo.
