Talk about idyllic! Founded by Russian German immigrants George and Alice Ament, Ament Farm in Logan County grew from 502 acres in 1914 to more than 2,000 acres today! Raised near the Volga River in Russia, George used his farming experience to grow sugar beets, corn, alfalfa and wheat, and later the couple raised cattle, dairy cows and chickens. George and Alice’s legacy is carried on by their grandson Donald, who rose to local fame after serving as Colorado Commissioner of Agriculture from 1999 to 2007. These days Donald spends his time working to keep the century-old farm thriving for another hundred years.

Founded by George Smith in 1914, the Smith Ranch has been raising cattle in Bent County for a hundred years, but it was no easy feat. Faced with environmental and economic challenges, the family persisted year after year, eventually passing the farm to George's son Mahlon, who had sixteen children with his wife, Ann. Today, the ranch is operated by Mahlon's son Jeff and his family, who created a custom hay business to safeguard the ranch during times of drought and high feed prices.
