I wish they’d explained the centre nova powers earlier. It was just a thing Yuuko wanted for reasons, but then at the last episode we find out you can split and stuff? Like, thats super cool and could have added more desirability and reason for wanting a position you know theres a good chance of disappearing with!

I really do believe that by becoming Center Nova while still a kenkyuusei, that Chieri succeeded her own name. Unless the day comes that a third season comes out and flat out says “no, you have to succeed someone, too", I believe that canon and story-wise, it makes the most sense for Chieri to become a new original. Arguing who she should succeed (whether because they’re your oshi or because you just want the Yuuko/Acchan rivalry to continue now that Nagisa has succeeded Acchan) is like saying that she can’t truly be a Center Nova unless she also takes on the name of an original member.

I know that succession and promotion works differently by the time of 0048, but what’s to say that kenkyuusei being promoted to successor-class couldn’t happen in the future (that is, the timeline the anime takes place in)? Chieri shines much more radiantly than any of the current successors, after all, and the fact that she’s still a kenkyuusei shouldn’t matter when it comes to her becoming Center Nova- succeeding herself is a much higher honor than taking on the name of one of the original AKB members- and who knows? Maybe one of the little girls from Tundrastar will one day become Chieri Sono the 2nd.

Chieri is very conflicted regarding her role as centre nova.

On one hand, she is very happy and greatful, being able to hold such a unique position.

But at the same time, the position is partially luck, so she feels that she doesn't quite have the skills or popularity or something to live up to the name. 

Because of this, she doesn't always perform as centre nova. With the position, nobody can stand in for her, meaning its a normal senbatsu or kenkyuusei performance, but there are no rules saying she has to be at the front for every performance either. 

Despite this, she's looking forward to the day where she feels confident enough to lead and protect every one as a proper centre nova.
