Swoon
“Not even the rain could stop visitors from showing up to meet mixed media and street artist Caledonia Curry, aka Swoon,” reported Met Media, the student news outlet for Denver’s Metro State University. New York artist Swoon, on the eve of her 2013 CVA mural unveiling, talked of being 10 years old and in her first art class finding “the space where I knew I could be safe and be myself.” Although an outsider to graffiti culture, she went on to connect her penchant for placing art in uninhabited spaces like abandoned buildings, with the community building work she’s been doing in Haiti and the “theme of finding and connecting with home.” Theory Loves Practice, the MSU research group that brings artists, students, and teachers together, quoted one attendee: “As I was listening and viewing Swoon’s incredible work on the streets, in the ocean, and in Haiti, I kept thinking. . . . She exemplifies what we teach our students on our best days: imaginative tinkering, inventive citizenship, synthesizing worlds, joyful collaboration, agency, chutzpah, and compassion.” @swoonhq @cva_msudenver @scenesfromthesidewalk
