The two high-end Macs with special hardware (“finally,” disgruntled Amiga users and smug owners of specially equipped PCs might have said) to offer new capabilities (one article within was titled “Apple Phone”) received feature coverage in this issue. The Newton was examined in not quite as much depth but a little more skepticism. Some of the shareware programs promoted were the long-remembered Malestrom and BBEdit Lite. In his back-page column, John C. Dvorak speculated on rumours Apple’s management was looking into merging the company, and after running through possibilities including AT&T, Motorola, and Sony, closed with the briefer “NeXT. Too late now! High concept but will never happen.”

The “AV Macs” were shown off on this issue’s cover with particular emphasis on their added technology offering “voice recognition.” Scattered throughout the magazine, though, were comments on how Apple would have to right its ship after the departure of John Sculley. Both Adrian Mello’s editorial near the front and Guy Kawasaki’s column at the back suggested Apple could possibly reduce the number of computer models it sold, although Kawasaki also declared the company ought to “Build a computer that will kill Macintosh” (“and sue Microsoft the first time it copies you.”)
