ReferenceP3, P4, P5, P6 these photos illustrate two ceramic maquettes for a possible central sculpture for my exhibition. The idea behind this central figure was initially a representation of a strong woman behind/beneath the restrictions of items of clothing/facades/barriers. The first of these maquettes featured here is based upon a Greek sculpture 5000 years old (see previous post) which I saw in The Metropolitan Museum in NYC. This sculpture had a lasting impact on me - both it’s beautiful deceptively simple shape, its longevity, and the depiction of a very solid strong looking woman. The maquette that I created was also incorporating inspiration from the work of Claudia Fontes. The second maquette pictured was also created in paper porcelain using a wooden and paper armature and built with slabs this maquette was based on the photo of a Hijabi woman in a Nike advertisement for modest sports wear. In the advert the women were in gymnastic poses creating fanatic shapes with their bodies. I found this was an image that portrayed women who although restricted by their ‘modest wear’ were still achieving great things. This was exactly what I wanted to portray with my work. Unfortunately due to the closure of college I have been unable to see how this maquette survived the firing process or to further explore using ceramics to create a figure. I have instead, during lockdown, invested in some chicken wire and plan to continue to explore creating a 3D work using chicken wire and papier-mâché at a future date. #strodefad #strodecollege #strodecollegeartdepartment #ceramicfigures #maquettes #themet #hijabi #nike #ancientgreekart https://www.instagram.com/p/B_pACGnF9UT/?igshid=15oqmrlfwlfct
