This destination elopement was definitely one for the books! The couple flew into town in March from out of state with 6 adults and their 2 young kiddos. Their little one had a complete and total meltdown as soon as we entered @henrycowellredwoods.sp . She was terrified of the tall trees and screamed hysterically during the entire walk into the forest, and for most of the ceremony! It slowed things down significantly, and because it had been raining daily, and because we caught a rare break, every second counted... I was barely over that gnarly flu that was going around in the winter and spring, and the redwoods were wet and cold that day. Oh and did I mention that they forgot their marriage license! In a talk I gave at @santacruzmah last night at a free event called “Demystifying Natural Deathcare” I shared about how daunting it can feel to talk about “ritual” and “ceremony”, because they’ve become dirty words in our culture, because of their association with organized religion. Words like “ritual” and “ceremony” evoke images of long, boring, drawn out services that felt lifeless and lackluster, and as imposing as they felt obligatory. But/and as organized religion loses it’s foothold in mainstream culture, many people, left with a bitter taste in their mouth, just toss the whole thing, and throw the baby out with the bathwater. In fact, more and more, people are choosing to forgo end of life (and other life cycle) ceremonies all together.
