Lifting Up The Truth - Neck Lift Surgery

Beauty, self-esteem, and happiness, we all want these things. It is hard to have this when you are unhappy with how you look. Some things are not as easy as throwing on some makeup to cover it up. Sometimes sutures are necessary to hold muscles in place, than a bandage will be applied to reduce swelling. Recovery is similar to the other surgeries for neck lifts. Antibiotics and pain medications should be given. Surgeries all come with risks and complications, having a neck lift is no different. 

To start with the patient could have an allergic reaction to the anesthesia; symptoms of an allergic reaction would be excessive swelling and hives. Anytime you have to cut into the skin there is a risk of excessive bleeding. Sometimes this is a risk in neck lift surgery and this can lead to a blood transfusion. Some have also experienced blood clots.

How Is A Neck Lift Different From A Face Lift?

Everyone knows that age is the biggest factor why the neck and face loses its elasticity. Wrinkles, eye bags and the turkey wobble are the results of aging. Weight loss is another factor in having sagging skin. Anyone seeking to have a more youthful look from the neck up through cosmetic plastic surgery, the decision may go down to a simple question – would a less expensive neck lift will do the job or a full facelift will give the expected benefits? There are similarities between the two procedures – it’s both cosmetic surgery procedures, it lessens the worn out look of a person and it can be performed at the same time to get the desired an expected result. But in the end it will still be an individual case and the final decision will depend on the patient.

Most specialists plastic surgeons recommend combining the two procedures. Combining the two will eliminate the need to choose between the two or to do it one at a time. A Necklift is a set of procedures that enhances the appearance of the neck. Procedures can include excess skin removal, liposuction, Botox injections and altering or removing neck muscles. In liposuction, an incision is made under the chin to remove the excess fat. An instrument called  a canulla ( a hollow tube with a blunt open end) will be inserted. The instrument is used to break up fat tissues around the neck region  and then sucked out using the cannulla.

A cervicoplasty is performed when removing excess skin on the neck.  A small cut is made under the chin and behind the ears. The specialist surgeon will cut back and lift the skin and then secure it with permanent sutures.

Lastly, platysmaplasty is performed to eliminate the neckbands. Incisions are made under the chin or behind the ears. Specific neck muscles will be realigned or in some cases removed. This will tighten the the middle region of the neck/ the incisions will be secured using permanent sutures after the procedure.

Swelling and bruising will occur up to 10 days but eventually subside. Pain relievers and antibiotics will be prescribed  to make the healing period faster.

A facelift on the other hand is more complicated  than Necklift. There are several techniques used  in doing facelifts. Facelifts generally involve  the removal of excess facial skin with or without the tightening of the underlying tissues; it also involves the face and neck skin redraping.

The most common  procedure for a facelift is called the SMAS facelift. The SMAS or superficial muscular aponeurotic system consists of the sensory ligaments that encases the cheek fat. Securing and resuspension of the SMAS will lead to a rejuvenated face. The deep plane facelift is developed to correct the deepening of the nasalobial fold. The mini facelift is the least invasive type of rhytidectomy.

This is similar to a full facelift but the only difference is the omission of the neck lift. It is also known as the Slift because the incision made is shaped of the incision that is used for a short-scar facelift.  The procedure has less downtime and is usually performed for people with deep nasolabial folds, sagging face structures but still possess a well contoured and firm neck.
