NEW DEER JUST DROPPED!!!!

This is the Pudella Carlae, and it's the first living cervid species described in the 20th century, as well as the first new world deer species described in more than 60 years :) they were previously assumed to be the same species as the Northern Pudu before it was found to be it's own distinct species just this month! They're native to the Huancabamba Depression in Peru, and are the second smallest cervid species after the Northern Pudu!

love moose as much as the next guy. they're up there as one of my favorite cervid species. but gonna be honest i think people act like theyre these invincible animals that theyre just not. they're large animals and are incredibly dangerous, yes. but not every moose is going to just get up and walk away from a vehicle collison. even the ones that do are probably going to eventually succumb to injuries sustained in the crash. orcas are not their only natural predators and even then moose are not a regular part of the diet for orcas. even healthy bulls can be taken down by a pack of wolves or a grizzly bear (or a siberian tiger, though this isn't well documented as they're pretty elusive animals themselves). I think the idea mostly comes from the fact that people often forget how large they are, and once reminded they get this whole image in their mind of them, y'know? I'm a big fan of large animals myself, especially large prey animals, but it needs to be kept in mind that nothings invincible, even if it is a giant beast with antlers.
