CFAC #30 Winners!

CFAC #30 was filled with interesting submissions that tried to work around the seven-line-text limit, and the competition was fierce. However, after much deliberation, I’ve come to a personal consensus on this week’s CardsFromArt Challenge, and I’ve figured out this week’s winners. Let’s take a look!

Category 1: Favorite card that used only one line of text (32 chars or less)

Category 2: Favorite non-Human creature

Here is where the decisions became difficult. All of the entries basically boiled down to birds and faeries (as expected). In the end, the bird side won out. This category’s winner is....

Witchhunter’s Raven by @noyan-dar​! The card may be a bit aggressively costed, but it felt appropriate for the colors and appropriate for the artwork, and is a good card overall. Congratulations, you’ll receive one point!

Category 3: Favorite non-creature spell

This category was pretty open, and I received submissions that matched it for pretty much each applicable card type. In the end, I went with a submission that was a cool twist on a classic design. This category’s winner is...

Fragile Wish by @amtgplayer​! I like the twist on the classic wish, and that it was pretty appropriately costed for such a unique effect. Congratulations, you will receive one point!

Finally, the overall winner

CardsFromArt Challenge #30!

Welcome, everyone, to the thirtieth CardsFromArt Challenge, where I find a piece of fantasy art online and you come up with an awesome Magic card design based on that piece of artwork!

Important: Make sure to follow these instructions or your entry won’t be counted!

Now, previously, I allowed contestants to reblog the contest with their submissions. However, this resulted in some problems where entries would be lost in tumblr’s atrocious notes system. So, for this week, I’m asking everyone to submit your entries directly through this link (which can also be found on my main page; it’s the “Submit Things Here” link) and include CFAC 30 somewhere in the submission.

Submissions are accepted in two forms: first, if you can, create a mock-up image of the card through a program like Magic Set Editor, MTGCardsmith, or even Photoshop if you’re fancy. Just remember to include the artist credit!

Second, if you’re a tumblr-mobile user or just can’t use any of the image software, you can submit a text version of your card with the following information:

Name - mana cost Type - subtype, rarity ability/abilities, power/toughness CFAC 30

I’ll create a full image of the card, and give you a few friendly critiques.

This week, we’re taking a look at a piece called Dream Catcher. It may not fit with some of the more traditional Magic stylings, but in something Innistrad-esque I could certainly see it fitting.

Really I just like crows.

Bonus Challenge: You’ve all had a week’s break, so I think I can afford to make this challenge a bit tougher on you. One of my pet peeves is when cards have a lot of text smashed together. This week, if you want to meet the bonus challenge, you won’t do that, because you can’t use more than seven lines of text in the rules text and flavor text (combined) of your card.

I’ll be going by MSE’s standards for this challenge, so the MSE-users have a bit of a leg up. For those that don’t, I did some experimenting with MSE to get a grasp of how much text constitutes a line. Approximately 32 characters can fit on a each line in MSE before it’s forced to wrap to the eighth line. Use that to gauge it if you don’t have MSE, and if it’s close, I’ll use the “32 characters per line” rule to double-check it.

Basically, make your card clean and concise, and you won’t have a problem. If you’re not sure, stop at six lines to be safe.

Weekly Winners: First, the card that I like the most will be awarded a bonus point, and will be added to the CFAC Hall-of-Fame. Then, a bonus point will be awarded to my favorite card that uses a single line of text (32 character maximum) for the rules text. Then, my favorite non-Human creature card will receive an additional bonus point. Finally, my favorite non-creature spell card will receive an additional bonus point.
