❝  It often baffled Joanna how swiftly circumstances could be subject to change, and yet women were still beholden to the flattery and desire paid to them by the gentlemen of court to advance their prospects. The shocking reality was that only a decade prior both Joanna and Anne Boleyn, her eldest companion, were untitled and scrapping for attention as a result of the middle child syndrome ; cleaving to each other for solace in a court known for its bedlam, majesty, and senseless behaviour. 

But such was no longer : Joanna was the mistress of the prestigious Dukedom of Warwick, and Anne was the countess of her husband’s distinguished earldom. And whilst court was undoubtedly an Eden for Anne, it was Tophet to Joanna – until very recently, her surname alone had put her in such jeopardy and uncertainty in London that she didn’t dare make the journey unless it was altogether required of her, and whilst times had changed and she no longer bore such hesitancy given the new head of state, there was some reticence in her willingness to admit fondness for court until she could properly bury her roots. She was new to its unending motion, a constant state of toing and froing to which Anne was a noted veteran.

Upon seeing Anne drifting in and out of the halls of court, Joanna plucked up her multitude of skirts and hurried to meet the pace of her unsuspecting companion. Her voice droll, she vented, “ my, my – would you look at what the tide brought in ? Has one grown weary of a country life already ? Tsk, tsk, Mistress Boleyn. Or shall I say Lady Northumberland ? ”
