Autoclave Mold Cart:

 To handle the mold for our most recent carbon fiber project I had to make a cart for the autoclave. The mold is made of solid aluminum and weighs several hundred pounds. More importantly, it barely fits in our autoclave. As you can see in the pictures above, when inserted and hooked up, the mold hangs out into the doorway. Luckily the door is a hemisphere and the part can extend into it. 

  To make the cart, I started with some 1/2″x1″ stainless stock. The design of the cart came out of an Auto-CAD mock-up of the mold and autoclave interior. To make the cart somewhat universal, I added 1/4″-20 threads along the side and cross bars. Using these threaded holes, I can add and remove tooling to the base cart to refit this cart for future projects. The bearing wheels can also be moved to any position to accommodate different distributions of weight. 

  Even after the cart was made and tested, I had to cut two triangles of sheet metal from the top and bottom of the autoclave’s interior liner. The gores and bagging material added nearly an inch to the diameter of the part and made the cuts necessary.
