ok so for context I was out in california last year and i saw these posters on bus stops and they had one of the chipmunks with cook or clean emphasized with various bullet points. At the time i was in the car so i couldnt check them out but I found them again and they’re for a food safety ad campaign directed at kids. It’s a perfectly fine effort and i support it completely (food safety is important and tbh seeing the chipmunks randomly in 2016 was jarring enough to get me to look this up so good work USDA) but it reminded my of my very strong feelings about the images of the chipmunks used for CGI promos.

(in road chip’s defense the other movie posters for this film are better but most of them aren’t great)
They almost always look the same. Every movie poster has the boys in the same configuration in the exact same pose. The only cgi style promotional images that have them in different poses are the promos for the live show.

And i really like the promo images for the live show, i think they’re cute and it’s nice to see them in dynamic poses.
Before I get too into this i want to note i generally like the cgi movies. They’re silly fun, have nice animation, and are generally funny and sweet. The designs of the chipmunks are pretty solid and closer to animals than they’ve been in decades which I appreciate.
All that being said the lack of effort in most of the movie posters for the CGI films is just boring. They can do a lot better ( as seen in the live show promo images) But they don’t and it’s just really lazy. It feels essentially like they slap the first round of promotional images together and expect you to just swallow it and I dont think that’s a good way to treat your project. It reeks of apathy toward your audience and I know these are directed at kids but even if your target audience is young kids take a little pride in your project/movie/franchise and make a half decent poster.
