from the wonderful @talesofsorrowandofruin! my words are dream, room, share, and dance. these excerpts are all from night's daughter :)
dream:
It’s hard to remember that it’s only been four years since I lived here, in the village proper. Sometimes it feels as though I have spent all my life in the cottage on the hill overlooking Kallana; as though the years of my childhood before that are a hazy, half-remembered dream.
room:
I left the door ajar when I walked out in my sleep, and the scent of chilly night air twines through the single room. All the furniture was left behind by whoever lived here before—the bed, the round table with its two creaky chairs, the narrow wardrobe, the wooden shelves along one wall. I remember how everything had been covered in dust when I entered for the first time, thick enough to make me sneeze. How it had felt like I’d stepped backwards in time, like something out of a fairy tale—the kingdom that had been asleep for a hundred years.
share:
I am already opening my mouth to reply when Maia squeezes my arm again, more forcefully. “We should be going now, Celena.” Her voice is firm, hard. The message is clear.
“You don’t want to share your new friend, Maia?” the girl croons, twisting a lock of her golden-brown hair around her finger. “Selfish of you, to keep her all to yourself.”
dance (cw/tw: implied animal death):
My mind focuses, vision narrowing to nothing but the pheasant among the leaves and brush. As my feet dance over the ground, quick and quiet, I send up a brief plea to the goddess Faline, the Lady of the Wild, willing her to let my arrow strike true. I draw the bowstring back, then release.
