“You’re like...the cheese to my macaroni.”
~
When the television show you had been watching cut to a commercial, you averted your eyes down to Hongbin’s hand, which you had been holding in both of yours. You spread it out flat, beginning to twirl your index finger in the center of his palm, before starting to going over the dull lines slowly.
“What do you want for dinner?” you asked absently, continuing to trace the lines on his hand, feeling somewhat drowsy as you did. You could feel your eyelids getting heavy, but you weren’t about to let yourself fall asleep this early - you hadn’t both been home for dinner in a while, and you couldn’t just waste your time together so simply.
You felt Hongbin’s shoulder shrug against yours, a hum coming from the back of his throat. “I don’t know.” he replied quietly.
You looked up slowly to meet his eyes, noticing that he had been watching you the entire time. You cleared your throat, suddenly feeling a bit self-conscious with his eyes on you.
“I’m not even sure why I asked, I don’t think we really have much to choose from.” you admitted, placing his hand back into his own lap before picking yourself up from the couch. “I’ll go look.”
Hongbin nodded, watching you as you exited the living room and disappeared around the corner. You felt disappointed as you browsed the nearly-empty cabinets, wishing that you had enough to cook Hongbin a decent meal.
You sighed after making your decision, grabbing the box from the shelf and shutting the cabinet door before returning to the living room.
“Looks like our only option is this.” you said, standing in front of Hongbin and holding the box out for him to see. “Unless you want some toast, or month-old cereal.”
Hongbin smiled, shaking his head. “No, I love mac-and-cheese. It’s perfect.”
You nodded back, not being able to help but smirk at how simple things were for him, how easy it was to please him.
“Pause the TV, lets make it now. I’m practically starving.” you waved your hand at the screen, waiting to see Hongbin pick up the remote before venturing back into the kitchen.
Before you could even finish filling up a pot with water, Hongbin had followed your steps, placing himself at your side and watching as you prepared everything.
After setting the pot on the burner and putting the lid on top, you turned to Hongbin and sighed.
“Now we wait.”
Hongbin nodded in understanding. “What should we do until then?”
“I don’t know.” you shrugged, leaning your hip against the hard edge of the counter. “I was hoping you had some ideas.”
“Well…” Hongbin wrinkled his chin as he thought for a moment, his eyes growing slightly wider at the thought of an idea. “I know,”
He moved past you to the other side of the kitchen, quickly looking over the shelf full of CDs before picking one, quickly placing it into the CD player and pressing play.
“Really?” you asked, raising your eyebrow at him as he turned to face you.
“Really.” he replied as the music began to play, swiftly taking the few steps back toward you, placing one hand on your hip and the other grabbing for yours, holding it up in the air.
“You know I’m awful at dancing.” you warned, raising your voice loud over the high volume of the classical music. It was a CD that you had played so many times since moving in together, having heard the songs so much that you both nearly knew all the melodies by heart.
“And so am I.” Hongbin replied, grinning wide as he began to sway you both back and forth.
The room was cramped, allowing little space for you to move around it, but you made it work. Hongbin maneuvered you both around the obstacles, keeping you both in time with the tempo of the song. You’d occasionally stumble into the table or bump your hips on the counter, only to laugh and shrug it off before continuing like nothing had happened.
Hongbin wrapped his arm around your back before dipping you down, holding you in the air with ease, keeping you there as the song began to fade. His face was close enough to yours that you could feel his breath against your chin, and he stayed like that a moment, even keeping the pose as he glanced up at the stove.
“I think the water’s ready.” he whispered breathlessly against your lips, kissing you quickly before pulling you back up to your feet.
You brought your hand to your chest, smiling as you tried to catch your breath. Hongbin turned down the volume of the music slightly as the next song began to play, before making his way back over to your side.
You pulled the lid from the pot, setting it off to the side before holding your hand out toward Hongbin, waiting for him to open the box and give it to you.
After pouring the noodles into the water, you waited patiently for them to cook, staying by the stove to stir them occasionally as you spoke casually about the show you had just put on, and how awful it must have actually looked.
“Grab the strainer out of the cabinet.” you instructed Hongbin, once you felt that the noodles were finished cooking. You pulling on two heat gloves before grabbing the handles of the pot and bringing it over to the sink.
Hongbin placed the strainer in the sink just as you got to it, both of you scrunching your faces up as the steam rose and floated around you from the noodles being poured. You shook the strainer out before pouring it all back into the pot, returning it to its spot on the stove before turning to Hongbin.
“You have everything?” you asked, holding out your hand toward him again.
He nodded, beginning to individually hand you all of the ingredients for you to stir into the noodles, saving the most important for last.
“Hongbin, where’s the-”
As you began to turn around to ask him about the last ingredient, you realized that he was behind you, his arms resting on your shoulders, his head peeking out from beside yours.
You turned back to face the stove, noticing that he was holding the packet of cheese out in front of you. As you tried to reach for it, Hongbin would hold it up higher in the air, only bringing it back down when you would lower your hands.
“Hongbin, I need to-”
“You wanna know something?” Hongbin asked suddenly, interrupting your words.
You sighed, giving up on trying to pry the package from his fingers. “Sure, Hongbin.”
“You’re like...the cheese to my macaroni.” he said softly, slowly averting his gaze from the cheese packet to the side of your face as if to watch your reaction.
You blinked, your eyes not leaving the package in front of you even though you could feel his eyes on you. You felt embarrassed that his dumb compliment was making you blush, your heart practically melting at his words.
Eventually, you turned your head to face him. “Y’know, Hongbin. That was pretty cheesy of you.” you said, not being able to help but burst into laughter at your own stupid joke.
